Maybe I'll participate in this thread after I recover from a few of these awful reminders of what could have been.
My apologies in advance to fans of the Vikings, Browns, Jags, etc. who have to see these potential matchups and weep at the possibilities.
So which pair of conference championship game losers from any given year would have been the most intriguing in the big game or simply the one you wanted to see the most? For the sake of this thread pretend there is no butterfly effect with any of these games. Exactly enough things happen in each game for both teams to win, and no major offseason moves change these teams in the future nor are any future outcomes affected. Each matchup is in a vacuum to the others, and we simply speculate on any given year which of these potential Super Bowls could have had the most intrigue had both conference championship games simply been flipped.
Super Bowl LII – (3) Jaguars (10-6) vs. (2) Vikings (13-3)
Vikings playing in their home stadium, Keenum vs. Bortles
Super Bowl LI – (4) Packers (10-6) vs. (3) Steelers (11-5)
Super Bowl XLV rematch, two top 10 offenses.
Super Bowl 50 – (2) Cardinals (13-3) vs. (2) Patriots (12-4)
Palmer's only Super Bowl appearance, Arians vs. Belichick, one last chance for Fitzgerald to get a ring.
Super Bowl XLIX – (2) Packers (12-4) vs. (4) Colts (11-5)
Luck vs. Rodgers, two top 10 offenses, Chuck Pagano is a head coach in the Super Bowl.
Super Bowl XLVIII – (5) 49ers (12-4) vs. (2) Patriots (12-4)
Rematch of a great regular season contest from the year prior.
Super Bowl XLVII – (2) Patriots (12-4) vs. (1) Falcons (13-3)
Tony G makes his lone Super Bowl appearance, oddly enough a matchup we would get 5 years later anyway.
Super Bowl XLVI – (2) Ravens (12-4) vs. (2) 49ers (13-3)
A matchup we would get the next year anyway, this has happened a few times.
Super Bowl XLV – (6) Jets (11-5) vs. (2) Bears (11-5)
Jay Cutler vs. Mark Sanchez, Rex Ryan vs. Lovie Smith, and overall would have been one of the weirder SB matchups ever.
Super Bowl XLIV – (2) Vikings (12-4) vs. (5) Jets (9-7)
40 year-old Brett Favre's last shot at a ring against a 23-year old QB and the team he just played for.
