Time for the 3rd edition of the mock draft! I have something special in this mock draft!
1.
Browns: Josh Allen, Quarterback, Wyoming
The Browns, with their eternal wisdom, select Josh Allen, who profiles as the next Ryan Mallet, Charlie Frye, or Patrick Ramsey. Perhaps he can become a good QB with a few years of development a la Aaron Rodgers, but why should we trust the NFL's worst head coach to develop him?
2.
Giants: Sam Darnold, Quarterback, USC
The Giants have three options in my opinion: Darnold, Barkley, or trade down. Their GM, Dave Gettleman, has never traded down before. Barkley looks like a great HB, but QBs are far more valuable in the NFL and Darnold has the potential to be a great QB. While his 2017 season at USC was a bit discouraging, turnover problems are easier to fix than accuracy issues (lookin' at you, Josh Allen).
3.
Jets: Baker Mayfield, Quarterback, Oklahoma
Sources are reporting that the Jets are targeting Mayfield. Baker Mayfield has limited size and a few questions off the field, but he blew away the competition with pinpoint accuracy and has that "it" factor. He's a more accurate Case Keenum (who is also 6' 1") and looks very similar to Russell Wilson.
4.
Browns: Josh Rosen, Quarterback, UCLA
Oh yeah, here we go! I am having the Browns draft 2 QBs in the first round. I mean, they've doubled their chances at finding a franchise QB!! ....in all seriousness, this would be a total waste of draft capital, but if neither of Rosen or Allen lose their value going into 2019, some team might pay a king's ransom for one of the two. But since this is the Browns, the situation will go very, very wrong.
5.
Broncos: Saquon Barkley, Running Back, Penn State
The Broncos get to sit back and watch the chaos from a distance. Now without C. J. Anderson, Barkley is a perfect fit for the Denver offense. Barkley dominated opponent after opponent and is in the 98th percentile athletically for a HB. He's a beast and the most likely in this draft to become a Hall of Famer.
6.
Colts: Bradley Chubb, Defensive End, N.C. State
With the ridiculous run on QBs over, the Colts land the draft's best defensive prospect. They have one good pass rusher in Jabaal Sheard; he can bookend Chubb and make this defense much stronger. Chubb should be able to fit in Indy's 3-4 scheme and notch 10 sacks a year.
7.
Buccaneers: Quenton Nelson, Offensive Guard, Notre Dame
The Buccaneers offense has been underwhelming for several years now. Their O-line has been a hindrance to Winston, and adding an All Pro guard in Nelson will do wonders for the run game. He might be able to play left or right tackle, so they could potentially get Donovan Smith off the LT spot, which would be a godsend for the Bucs.
8.
Bears: Tremaine Edmunds, Outside Linebacker, Virginia Tech
The Bears need an impact pass rusher and run stopping linebacker, and they were able to move down and select Edmunds. Tremaine just had a monster season at Virginia Tech and the sky is the limit for him. I have heard that Edmunds will not fall out of the top 10, so the Bears will not be able to trade down.
9.
49ers: Roquan Smith, Outside Linebacker, Georgia
The 49ers run defense was awful last season, and with Rueben Foster more likely to end up behind bars than play football in 2018, they need a dominant inside linebacker. Roquan is that guy and is clean off the field, which is a nice bonus.
10.
Raiders: Denzel Ward, Cornerback, Ohio State
This is a windfall for the Raiders, of whom need any kind of secondary help they can get. Ward, Fitzpatrick, or James would all be great options to help revamp the Raider defense.
11.
Packers: Derwin James, Safety, Florida State
Trade! The Packers have sent a mid-round pick and their 14th overall pick to the Dolphins.
Even with Aaron Rodgers healthy, the Packers won't be winning playoff games without a decent defense. They lost Morgan Burnett, who was by far their best DB, in free agency, and James would be a huge upgrade to a team that has to deal with some pretty good QBs in their division.
12.
Bills: Lamar Jackson, Quarterback, Louisville
If the Bills like Lamar, they need to take him now before another team jumps up and nabs him. Jackson has Vick-like escapability and he has a cannon. He needs to work on his accuracy, but it's not as bad as Josh Allen's accuracy problems.
13.
Redskins: Minkah Fitzpatrick, Safety, Alabama
The Redskins need to improve their pass defense, as they've lost Bashaud Breeland and Kendall Fuller. Montae Nicholson is slotted to start at safety, but plugging Fitzpatrick in would do them wonders.
14.
Dolphins: Vita Vea, Defensive Tackle, Washington
(The Dolphins traded down with the Packers.)
The Dolphins had to release Suh to open some cap room, and now they need a cheaper replacement. Vea would be a great value pick here and would be able to mitigate the loss of Suh. Vea is a massive DT/NT who is athletic despite his size.
15.
Cardinals: Courtland Sutton, Wide Receiver, SMU
The Cardinals have about one year of Larry Fitzgerald left along with Brice Butler. They need to give their new QB a weapon, and Sutton is fast and 6'5". Sutton should be the first WR taken, as Calvin Ridley has plenty of red flags around him.
16.
Cowboys: D.J. Moore, Wide Receiver, Maryland
Trade! The Cowboys have sent a mid-round pick and their 19th overall selection to the Ravens for this pick.
The Cowboys desperately need WR help as their group is probably the worst in the NFL right now. Moore has the potential to be a #1 WR and can instantly be a starter in Dallas.
17.
Chargers: Da'Ron Payne, Defensive Tackle, Alabama
The Chargers plan on having a defensive draft, and that probably involves the NT position. With Corey Liuget suspended, the Chargers will be able to replace him with a better D-lineman.
18.
Patriots: Mike McGlinchey, Offensive Tackle, Notre Dame
Trade! The Patriots have traded a mid-round pick and sent the Seahawks their 23rd overall selection.
There's been some talk that McGlinchey isn't as well-liked as a LT in the NFL as some originally thought. The Patriots won't mind as they move up to take him 18th overall. He should seamlessly fill in Nate Solder's old role.
19.
Ravens: Isaiah Wynn, Offensive Tackle, Georgia
(The Ravens traded down with the Cowboys.)
The Ravens have a bunch of suspect players on their offensive line. They only have Ronnie Stanley and Marshal Yanda as competent O-linemen, so Wynn's addition at guard, tackle, or even center will be very welcome.
20.
Lions: Taven Bryan, Defensive Tackle, Florida
The Lions need help on the D-line interior after losing Haloti Ngata. Bryan is a supremely-talented interior pass rusher whose skills should translate well into the NFL. He's one of the best players available and fills a need for Detroit.
21.
Bengals: James Daniels, Center, Iowa
The Bengals need to make more additions to their O-line, and Daniels should be able to do the center position justice after Russell Bodine gave the Bengals years of incompetent play. This pick is a toss-up between Daniels and Ragnow and Price, but I think Daniels edges out the competition.
22.
Bills: Leighton Vander Esch, Inside Linebacker, Boise State
The Bills have nothing at linebacker right now. OK, maybe you're a Matt Milano fan, but that still leaves 2 positions wide open. Leighton Vander Esch will be a great new addition to a defense that played well in 2017 but lost several parts in free agency.
23.
Seahawks: Marcus Davenport, Defensive End, Texas-San Antonio
(The Seahawks traded down with the Patriots.)
The Hawks love moving down in the draft, and it'll likely happen this year with zero picks on Day 2. They can still land a pass rusher to replace Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett, and though Davenport needs time to develop, he will likely end up being a steal at pick #23.
24.
Panthers: Joshua Jackson, Cornerback, Iowa
A pretty darn good corner has fallen right into the lap of the Panthers. With James Bradberry and Ross Cockrell as the top two outside corners, Carolina needs a guy who can shadow #1 WRs. Jackson has the potential to be that guy as nobody was able to pass against him in 2017 at Iowa.
25.
Titans: Harold Landry, Defensive End, Boston College
Landry makes too much sense here as the Titans need a 3rd pass rusher behind Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan. Landry had an all-pro 2016 year at Boston College but didn't do quite as well in 2017. He has some serious star potential if Tennessee can figure him out.
26.
Falcons: Hayden Hurst, Tight End, South Carolina
The Falcons have been disappointed with Austin Hooper, and they've spent long enough waiting for him to become an NFL-caliber TE. While I've seen plenty of debate who should be the first TE taken, I believe it will be Hurst.
27.
Saints: Calvin Ridley, Wide Receiver, Alabama
The Saints have a difficult act to follow acing the 2017 draft. Calvin Ridley had a bad combine and has some red flags, but he still might end up being a #1 receiver. He could end up like his alumni Amari Cooper - ultra talented but unable to seize his destiny as a top notch WR. He will compete with Ted Ginn and Cameron Meredith for a starting job.
28.
Steelers: Rashaan Evans, Inside Linebacker, Alabama
You're probably sick of hearing about how badly the Steelers need an ILB after Shaizer's injury. But just look at the box scores and see how the injury affected them - the defense wasn't the same. The Steelers might need to trade up to assure they get one of the top 4 LBs.
29.
Cardinals: Mason Rudolph, Quarterback, Oklahoma State
Trade! The Cardinals gave up a whole bunch of picks to move up to get this Jaguars pick.
The Cardinals need to find a long-term QB, as Sam Bradford will probably last about 8 games before his knee acts up again. Rudolph can be their starting QB in 2019, preventing Arizona from paying Bradford $20M in 2019 as well.
30.
Colts: Derrius Guice, Running Back, LSU
Trade! The Colts have traded up and sent a mid-rounder and the 4th pick in the 2nd round to the Vikings.
The Colts have 3 second round picks, so why not trade up and get a 5th year option on a guy? The Colts need a HB as they should have moved on from Frank Gore in 2016. Guice should be able to handle a feature role in Indy.
31.
Browns: Maurice Hurst, Defensive Tackle, Michigan
Trade! The Browns have sent the Patriots a late round pick and their 3rd pick in the second round to move up.
The Browns have moved up to pounce on the best player available - Maurice Hurst. With Danny Shelton gone, Hurst can team up with Larry Ogunjobi to produce some pass rush.
32.
Eagles: Kolton Miller, Offensive Tackle, UCLA
Jason Peters is always hurt and he's old, and Halapoulivaati Vaitai (yes, I spelled that without looking it up) is a swing tackle at best. Miller might be able to play LT, and if not, we could see Lane Johnson try LT and Miller play RT. He's a boom/bust draft pick.
This time around, I'm going to mock the second round as well.
33.
Browns: Jaire Alexander, Cornerback, Louisville
The Browns can pick up a really good corner at this juncture, though he'll be on the bench year one with Gaines, Carrie, Mitchell, and Boddy-Calhoun on the roster.
34.
Giants: Ronald Jones II, Running Back, USC
Ronald Jones was one of the best HBs in college last year. The Giants have next to nothing at the position and Jones would be a great first and second down back.
35.
Patriots: Isaiah Oliver, Cornerback, Colorado
(The Patriots traded down with the Browns).
The Patriots need a CB now that Malcolm Butler has moved on in free agency. Oliver has the size and upside the Patriots are looking for in a CB.
36.
Vikings: Frank Ragnow, Offensive Guard, Arkansas
(The Vikings traded down with the Colts).
The Vikings need to fill in the RG slot that Joe Berger has left open. Ragnow has some experience there and has been a fantastic interior linemen for all three years of his college career.
37.
Colts: Connor Williams, Offensive Tackle, Texas
The Colts badly need to upgrade their O-line. Williams will probably end up at guard, but that's fine as Jeremy Vujnovich is currently slated to be a starter. The Colts can't afford to have another year of awful O-line play.
38.
Buccaneers: Sony Michel, Running Back, Georgia
Peyton Barber is penciled in at the HB position for the Bucs right now. Michel will give the Bucs offense some play-making ability that it sorely needs.
39.
Bears: Anthony Miller, Wide Receiver, Memphis
The Bears have one viable WR in Allen Robinson, and he's coming off of ACL surgery. Taylor Gabriel is a part-time player and Kevin White has been a total bust, so Miller could supplant both of them as the #2 WR.
40.
Broncos: Will Hernandez, Offensive Guard, UTEP
The Broncos are able to steal a 1st round prospect right here - Hernandez will be able to fill in the LG spot so Max Garcia and Connor McGovern won't have to fight for that spot.
41.
Raiders: Dallas Goedert, Tight End, South Dakota State
Jared Cook has had a crazily-inconsistent career, and that included being a poor receiver for Derek Carr. With their last TE prospect, Clive Walford, moving on, Goedert might be able to be that receiving TE the Raiders have lacked for a long time.
42.
Dolphins: Malik Jefferson, Inside Linebacker, Texas
The Fins LB situation was awful last year. McMillan blew his knee, Alonso regressed for the second straight season, and Timmons looked washed up. The combo of Jefferson and a healthy McMillan is a nice start.
43.
Patriots: Michael Gallup, Wide Receiver, Colorado State
After trading Brandin Cooks away, the Patriots need to find a young receiver to pair with Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan. Gallup had an incredible season at Colorado State and has flown under the radar through the draft process. Maybe the Pats could break their habit of drafting bad WRs?
44.
Redskins: Nick Chubb, Running Back, Georgia
Having the running game go through Robert Kelley and Samaje Perine will guarantee you a running game that average 3.5 yards a carry. Chubb is so much more dynamic than the aforementioned HBs and would give Alex Smith some much needed help.
45.
Packers: Lorenzo Carter, 3-4 Outside Linebacker, Georgia
Sources say the Packers are looking for another pass rusher as Clay Matthews is getting old. Carter is an athletic monster but his production at Georgia never matched his talent. The Packers will have a 1st round talent if they can unlock his true potential.
46.
Bengals: Ronnie Harrison, Safety, Alabama
The Bengals defense was a big disappointment last season, and it might be time to switch the safety position up. Harrison could also end up playing linebacker, which is also a position of need for the Bengals.
47.
Jaguars: Braden Smith, Offensive Guard, Auburn
(The Jaguars traded down with the Cardinals).
The Jags made a big trade down with the Cards. The Jaguars don't have a lot of needs, so they can pick up a pick in next year's draft and also find a bargain here in the second round. Smith is incredibly underrated and I think he's one of the safer picks in the draft. He can replace A. J. Cann.
48.
Chargers: Mike Hughes, Cornerback, Central Florida
OK, this is the last time I'll claim there was a "steal" in this round. Mike Hughes might be a 1st rounder, but his inexperience will likely land him in the top of the second round.
49.
Colts: Donte Jackson, Cornerback, LSU
The Colts have basically nothing at corner. Quincy Wilson might be a starting caliber player... but they need to add bodies. Jackson is a CB prospect who's a borderline first rounder, but there's so many borderline CBs, he's been overshadowed.
50.
Cowboys: Harrison Phillips, Defensive Tackle, Stanford
The Cowboys would do well to upgrade from Maliek Collins. Phillips is a big run stopper who would be put to good use on 1st and 2nd downs.
51.
Lions: Josh Sweat, Defensive End, Florida State
Sweat is similar to Lorenzo Carter; he's athetlically a 1st rounder but didn't accomplish enough at Florida State. He'll be a project to stash behind Ansah and Zettel.
52.
Ravens: James Washington, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State
The Ravens have a lot of new bodies at WR, but they could stand to use a promising young WR with a high ceiling. He likely wouldn't start in year one, but Washington has some fans in the draftnik community that suggest he will be a very good starting receiver.
53.
Bills: Orlando Brown, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma
The Bills lost Richie Incognito to retirement and the plan at RT is Marshal Newhouse or Jordan Mills. Brown can help avert one of those two disasters - that is, if he can hang with NFL athletes with his molasses-slow speed.
54.
Chiefs: Billy Price, Offensive Guard, Ohio State
Somehow, a guy named Brian Witzmann started over 90% of the snaps at guard for the Chiefs. I don't know how that happened, but Price can save that situation and potentially play center if Mitch Morse isn't up to snuff.
55.
Panthers: Justin Reid, Safety, Stanford
After cutting Kurt Coleman, 37 year old Mike Adams is the only starting caliber safety on the team. Reid would be a fine addition to the team.
56.
Bills: Carlton Davis, Cornerback, Auburn
The Bills let E. J. Gaines go and have Vontae Davis on a one year deal alongside the stud Tre'Davious White. Buffalo can add another Davis to the mix, who might be play to play nickel corner.
57.
Titans: Darius Leonard, Outside Linebacker, South Carolina State
The Titans lost Avery Williamson to the Jets, so they could use somebody like Leonard to rile in his old role.
58.
Falcons: R.J. McIntosh, Defensive Tackle, Miami
After losing Dontari Poe in free agency, the Falcons could use a run stuffer like McIntosh.
59.
49ers: Sam Hubbard, Defensive End, Ohio State
The 49ers could use some depth at the pass rusher position as Solomon Thomas had a disappointing rookie season and Arik Armstead shouldn't be an outside linebacker.
60.
Steelers: Tyrell Crosby, Offensive Tackle, Oregon
The Steelers lost their talented swing tackle, Chris Hubbard, to the Browns. They'll need to find a backup who can take over if anything happens to Marcus Gilbert or Alejandro Villanueva.
61.
Jaguars: Mike Gesicki, Tight End, Penn State
The Jags added Austin Seferian-Jenkins, but I don't know if he's an NFL caliber TE. Gesicki has some sick receiving skills but is a poor blocker.
62.
Vikings: Duke Ejiofor, Defensive End, Wake Forest
The Vikings could use another pass rusher to complement Griffen and Hunter. Ejiofor had a prolific career at Wake Forest and with his size (6' 6" 270 lbs) he could play inside DT on passing downs.
63.
Patriots: Kyle Lauletta, Quarterback, Richmond
The Patriots pick up their next QB to groom behind Brady, possibly for another team to have in a trade. Honestly, I haven't studied much of Lauletta's work, so I don't have much to say.
64.
Browns: DaeSean Hamilton, Wide Receiver, Penn State
Corey Coleman might be a bust, and I think they only have one more year of control of Josh Gordon, so Hamilton would be a logical option at the bottom of the second round.
Any thoughts?
