So the combine is over, now the pro days start.
First cab off the rank is Alabama on Wednesday 7 March.Rick Spielman,Mike Zimmer and some Vikings assistants will be headed south to watch the National Champions work out.
Here's a list of the guys that rank in the top 100,with a Vikings slant included:
Minkah Fitzpatrick (DB) 6'1" 205lbs.
Fitzpatrick is a beast who can play safety or corner. The top rated DB in the draft,he will be gone within the top 10 picks so the Vikings won't have a chance at drafting him.
Calvin Ridley (WR) 6'0" 189lbs
Ridley is one of the top ranked receivers in this class. He possess blazing speed (4.43) and can run the full route tree and should be a day 1 starter. Some scouts question his ability to win in press coverage because of his thin frame.Regardless,he'll still be a first round pick and should go in the top 20 picks. The Vikings have bigger needs so he's not a realistic target.
Da'Ron Payne (DT) 6'2" 311lbs
This guy is a beast! One of the top ranked DTs in the draft,Payne is like the immovable object in the middle of a defense. He's incredibly athletic for his size, has great balance and uses his hands well.He is quick off the ball and makes life a nightmare for interior offensive lineman with his quick punch to get them off balance. He wasn't asked to rush the passer in college but has shown pass rush skills.Payne was dominant against Georgia in the National Championship. He will definitely be on the Vikings radar and could well be the player drafted at #30.He could become my draft crush, paired next to Linval our run defense would be awesome.
Rashaan Evans (LB) 6'3" 232lbs
Evans is a guy on the rise.He had to sit behind the likes of Reuben Foster, but when he got his chance he took it.Another very athletic guy with good size and speed,Evans would most likely play at the Will position in a 4-3.He is projected to be a late 1st or 2nd round pick. With his limited playing time at Alabama he will only get better in the pros,so he could be a steal if he slides to the bottom of round 2.The Vikings may have some interest if he's available in round 2.
Ronnie Harrison (S) 6'3" 214lbs
Harrison is another of the very athletic DBs Alabama has produced. He can play either high or low and is very adept at either position.Because of his size he is capable of defending against taller receivers and tight ends. His biggest weakness is a tendency to go flying in to plays looking for the big hit and missing the play entirely, however this can be corrected.
He's currently ranked as a second or third round pick. From a Vikings viewpoint,if Harrison were still available in the 3rd round then he definitely warrants consideration. He has far superior pass coverage skills to Andrew Sendejo, and could also slide over to cover for Harrison Smith should he miss a game.Ronnie Harrison's athleticism, size and play making skills should be carefully scrutinized by Mike Zimmer and co during the draft process.
Anthony Averett (CB) 6'0" 185lbs
Averett is a lean corner who had injury problems early in his career. He finally got to start in 2017 and had a rough time in the opening game against USC when the Trojans exploited his lack of experience. To his credit,Averett fought back strongly and actually had a pretty good season. He's a hard worker who takes coaching well and always strives to improve.I find him a difficult player to grade,he has great speed but doesn't know how to use it,he can cover yet still gives up some easy plays. Is this a lack of experience, poor concentration or something else? My best guess would be 3rd to 5th round. Will the Vikings draft him? Well Mike Zimmer knows way more about evaluating DBs than I ever will, and if he likes the kid then that's good enough for me.
Da'hawn Hand (DE) 6'4" 297lbs
To put it bluntly,Da'Shawn Hand is an extremely talented athlete who is lazy.He was the number 1 recruit in 2014,ahead of guys like Myles Garrett,Deshaun Watson and Leonard Fournette. While these three have gone on to live up to their potential,Hand has been a disappointment for Alabama.Despite his quickness, athleticism and natural ability,Hand has a tendency to go in to cruise mode rather than take the game on and dominate the point of attack. He had a DUI arrest in July 2017,and that could drop him down some boards. For the Vikings he is a guy they may draft if he falls, but Zimmer would have to be sure that DaShawn will put in the required work to use his talent the way he should,as he could be a solid NFL starter if he puts in the work.Round 3 to 5.
