In all seriousness, maybe their rule changes are good. Maybe the leadership is sound now. But this league will never gain steam if the biggest names in the league are Cardale Jones who couldn’t crack a terrible Buffalo Bills team, and something called PJ Walker? If they really want to create some headlines and be known as a legit professional organization, start recruiting the best NCAA freshman and sophomores to play in that league for 2 years instead of college football.
They are gaining steam. The week 2 SEA game had 30,000 fans in attendance, and week 1 ticket sales outsold the entire AAF's existence.
They already have made it clear they intend on recruiting college players and 5 star high school recruits. They made an offer already to Trevor Lawrence.
The QB position is by far the scarcest part of the talent pool, but the rest of of the league is easily and clearly NFL talent, just minus the starters. (For the most part, as there absolutely are staters in the XFL who just happened to be unemployed when they called, and will likely resume their NFL career at some point)
TV ratings will tell the story. Attendance numbers won’t keep the lights on. The AAF crumbled in TV ratings and they ran out of money. McMahon has deep pockets, but he had deep pockets to keep the lights on last time. They’re taking advantage of a slow sports time. We’ll see how they hold up with March Madness, The Masters, NBA/NHL playoffs, and opening day MLB right around the corner.
For the record, I hope they do go after the young players. Be different if the NFL is not going to budge from their 3 year post high school rule to be draft eligible. I’ve believed there’s a need for a professional league for the people who have no desire to play in NCAA and make money doing so. Go after the Clemson and Alabama players who are majoring in “football” waiting until the moment they can get drafted.
