Here's the depth chart for the players under contract for 2018 with the upcoming free agents alongside them:
Note - RFAs (Restricted Free Agents) can be tendered and in almost all circumstances they will return. All four of them will be back next season unless something unusual happens.
-I've somewhat refined how I assign PFF grades to the players. Some players like Bridgewater and Sharrif Floyd are now "Not Enough Info" since they haven't played extensively since 2015.
-Do you think PFF does a good job evaluating how the Vikings are graded? Who's underrated or overrated? Which of our FAs should be re-signed? Any comments are welcome.
- Vikings Free Agent Contracts -
(contract size and price, not who's signing them)
QB Case Keenum - 3/60/25 (years/total/guaranteed)
There's no doubt in my mind that Keenum is getting paid. His contract is going to soar past Mike Glennon's and deservedly land in the Tannhill/Dalton territory. The problem is that these types of QBs are being overpaid, and so will Keenum.
QB Sam Bradford - 1/7 (with plenty of incentives)
Teams aren't going to line up for Bradford mostly because of his knee. Two ACL tears and a bone bruise (?) caused him to miss basically 3 seasons. When healthy, he boasts an incredibly accurate arm. Needs to have a decent O-line to survive (though ironically he lasted through 2016's atrocity of an O-line but not 2017. He's a tough cookie but the knee is problematic).
**QB Teddy Bridgewater - 1/7 (incentives w/ option years possible)
He shouldn't be a free agent according to the rules, but it's possible his contract will not toll over. Teddy hasn't completed a pass in 2 years and his signing comes with a similar amount of risk as Bradford's. Teddy has more theoretical upside but nobody knows if he'll be able to pick up where he left off in the 2016 preseason.
HB Jerick McKinnon - 3/16.5/5
McKinnon will command a deal similar to Murray's deal with the Vikings. He's a dangerous player running and receiving the ball, though he's not built to be a bellcow. McKinnon wants to be a feature back, but it's up for debate if any team will try to sign him for that role.
DT Tom Johnson - 2/9/4
Tom jumped into a full time job and held his own, which was a bit surprising. If the Vikings don't bring him back, somebody else will give him a part time role for a solid chunk of change.
DT Shamar Stephen - 3/9/4
Stephen had his best season in a part-time run stuffing role. He'll command a few million per year and the Vikings could definitely afford to bring him back.
K Kai Forbath - 1/1.5
I'm not sure if the Vikings should bring Forbath back. He figured out how to hit PATs again but had a tendency to miss longer FGs and have several blocked. He's a #20-30 kicker in the NFL but a team like the Chargers would pounce on him if given the chance.
CB Marcus Sherels - 2/4/2
Sherels is starting to get old and he doesn't have the agility other punt returns do. He still has safe hands and is a very good special teamer. As an aside, the Vikings should try to groom a kick returner/punt returner.
Others
CB Newman - If he wants to play at age 40, someone will give him another 1 year deal.
WR Floyd - his career is nearly over after mysteriously losing the ability to get open in 2016. He'll have to play at the minimum salary.
OLB Lamur - He's a passable backup who would command $1-2M in free agency.
CB Brock - He used to be a solid starter for the 49ers but after he was accused of assault, he was cut and became a reserve player. His career's trajectory is pointed in the wrong way.
HB Sankey - He wasn't good before the ACL tear. He might have been the 3rd HB after Cook went down if he was still healthy. His NFL career is virtually over.
Now here's the big question - which of these deals would you make and which players would you say goodbye to?
