I might be spoiling a little something from my offseason article that's coming in the next couple weeks, but what about the possibility of trading Barr? He's been somewhat overrated with a poor 2016 season and an average 2017. I think he'd be better as an edge defender in a 3-4 defense... his $12M tag would prevent the Vikings from getting too much in a trade [for him straight-up], but if they could find a LB to upgrade him, I'd do it. Finding an upgrade is much easier said than done, however.
Also as a random aside, I was just examining the Patriots roster and I noticed that they get away with skimping at the LB position and their defense seems to be fine without any good LBs... their LB core is Kyle Van Noy (former Lions 2nd round bust, Poor rating from PFF), Elandon Roberts (6th rounder in his 2nd year, Poor rating from PFF), and they play 3 safeties 70% of the time, getting Duron Harmon out there a whole bunch (Good rating from PFF).
Maybe the Vikings could trade Barr and implement a 3rd safety (right now it'd be Anthony Harris) and play Gedeon more often?
Yup, there I go praising the Patriots just as their LBs stunk up the game with some pretty terrible run stopping. I still like the 3 safety idea, though it does have its weaknesses as the Patriots lost starting safety Patrick Chung in the second half and they were playing 3 safeties at all times with even 4 on the field (as a slot corner).
