Linked to Leighton Vander Esch for several weeks this offseason, the Steelers met with the Boise State outside linebacker on Monday night, Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst reports. Pittsburgh has used first-round picks on either inside or outside ‘backers in four of its past five drafts. Three of those players remain on the team, but only two will be able to play this season. Ryan Shazier has been declared out as he attempts to recover from his frightening spine injury. Pauline wrote in March that Vander Esch won’t get past Pittsburgh at No. 28.

Next up for Vander Esch met the Cowboys on Wednesday morning, James Palmer of NFL.com tweets. After that, he has the Cardinals and every team picking between No. 12 to No. 24, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Aside from the aforementioned clubs, the teams picking from No. 12-24 are the Bills (twice), Redskins, Packers, Ravens, Chargers, Seahawks, Lions, Bengals, Bills, Patriots, and Panthers.

I agree with this report - I don't see Vander Esch falling into the 2nd round. There is enough need for LBs among NFL teams that he'll get scooped up.

I've been hearing "Pittsburgh" and "New England" for a while now. New England was the first to call around about him, I believe.

Would love it if he landed with a respected organization. Pittsburgh? That'd be intense.

If the Vikings picked him, I think Ivan might faint or ... something. Ain't nobody got time for that. lol.

Vikings could be in depending on how the OL players fall out.

I don't think they coach defense in Pitt anymore

Here's some not-so-good news about Vander Esch from Charlie Campbell:

Sources from four teams said they felt Vander Esch belongs on the second day of the 2018 NFL Draft and would go there. Two other team sources thought Vander Esch could go late in the first round. One team that flunked him medically said they had a third-round grade on Vander Esch before the medical report ruled him out.

"To me, he's a third-round talent, but probably will go higher," said an AFC general manager. "He has gotten a lot of hype, but he plays soft. He's too much like Paul Posluszny for me. He's a good player and will have a lot of tackles, but most of them will come four yards downfield. He's not an impact-at-the-line guy like a Ray Lewis, Luke Kuechly, Jon Beason or Brian Urlacher."

Helping Vander Esch to go in the first round are teams not having 32 first-round grades. It varies by team, but in the final dozen picks of the first round, there will be players with second-round grades getting selected because there are not enough true first-rounders. Vander Esch could be one of those players, but medical concerns also might cause him to slide to Day 2 of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Getting medically flunked is not good... we've seen players plummet down the draft board in years past due to similar reasons. Hopefully for Leighton it's just the one team that red-flagged him.

It's possible this is a total smokescreen, but why add the fact that they thought he was only worth a 3rd round pick before the medicals flunked him? I wouldn't consider this info common knowledge as you won't see Campbell used as a source for big websites like Rotoworld and Pro Football Rumors.

Still, it's clear Vander Esch will be getting drafted in the 2nd round at latest, so this team is wasting their time with this potential smokescreen.

My cousin and I were theory crafting a possible solution for our cap space problems and one idea we came up with is we trade Barr to the Colts for their highest 2nd (if they really have an offer for Barr that spielman likes I don't think that's unreasonable) and then package our 2nd and that 2nd to trade back into the first and get leighton vander esch.

By trading Barr we get a younger, equally talented LB at the cost of him and some draft capital on a brand new rookie deal which allows you to extend a Diggs or Hunter. So it's like Barr + a 2nd for Leighton and Diggs.

Boise State used Leighton a lot like we use barr, lots of blitz, etc. I like the fit a lot. Leighton does have some issues, most notably with experience but that makes sense since he only really played one full year. What I like about him though is even in that one year, he made a bunch of improvements from the first game of the year to the last. I can see him doing specific things better in the film as the year went on and knowing he'd be in good hands with our coaches I'm optimistic he'd turn into a stud sooner rather than later.

If he is getting this much attention we might have to use our first + the colts second to make sure we get him and then it's not as sweet of an idea and of course this is probably a mega long shot scenario anyway but it was fun to think about.
