NFL adds 15-yard penalty for grounds crew clearing snow for a field goal

Just before Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri lined up for a game-tying extra point on a snowy day last season in Buffalo, the Colts sent some sideline personnel onto the field to attempt to remove snow from the area where the kick would be lined up, and help Vinatieri get better footing. That was a violation of league rules, but no penalty was called.

That’s because at the time, no penalty could be called. As PFT noted afterward, the officials had the authority to kick the Colts’ personnel off the field, but they didn’t have the authority to assess a yardage penalty because the prohibition on clearing snow was a Game Operations Policy, not a rule.

Now it’s a rule.

As noted by Football Zebras, the 2018 rulebook has been adjusted to say that “It is impermissible for the grounds crew or other team personnel to clear away snow for a Try kick, field goal, punt, or kickoff.” The penalty would be 15 yards.

It only makes sense to give the officials the authority to do something about it if a team breaks a rule in an attempt to gain a competitive advantage. In the future, it will be a 15-yard penalty.

Walt Coleman: Don’t blame the refs for catch rule fiascos by Mike Florio

“Most of the calls that seemed to create the most controversy, we ruled them correctly and then they were overturned on replay,” referee Walt Coleman said Friday, per the Associated Press, in connection with the annual pre-training camp gathering of game officials. “From our standpoint, we’re just going to continue to officiate the plays like we have.”

It’s a stunningly candid assessment, and a somewhat tactful was of saying, “Don’t blame us.” And it has indeed been the excruciating, frame-by-frame application of replay review that has supplanted know-it-when-you-see-it common sense with a micromanaging of decisions made in real time.

The new rule combines objectivity and subjectivity to make it harder to overturn a ruling on the field of a catch and easier to overturn a ruling of a non-catch. Which should lead to more catches. Which is what everyone seems to want.

“People just didn’t understand that you had to hold on to the ball going to the ground,” Coleman said of the former rule. “When you catch the ball and you reach out, everybody thought that should be a catch. The way the rule was written, it wasn’t.”

It’s not that people didn’t understand the prior rule. It’s that people thought the prior rule conflicted with common sense. The new rule doesn’t, if it’s applied in a common-sensical way.

Ahhh yeah, chart party. I've seen them all lol. That's the kind of weird videos I'd be making if I weren't so lazy. But no, kickoffs aren't stupid and bad. How else are you supposed to start the next possession? An automatic 4th and 10 from their own 35? As he points out, it has a 31% success chance, whereas an onside kick is only 5%. Why are we giving losing teams such an advantage? Do we really want to watch the Vikings try to stop 4th and 10 with a 1 possession lead? Smells like more heartbreaking digits in the L column to me.

And he contradicts himself. It's stupid because TD's are rare, but it's interesting because the onside kick recoveries are rare lol.

It definitely worries me. I wish the refs could adopt a strategy of not calling anything unless it is a blatant penalty. Similar to like how holding is usually called. I am very worried about the refs this season and it is the only thing that could turn me off from football.

Antwione Williams was flagged for roughing the passer in the 2nd half, a call that Mike Zimmer wasn't happy with initially but then understood why the officials called it: "After I calmed down a little bit, I looked at it and his (Williams) head was to the side and he was going to the side. If he would have just rolled, but he kind of pumped him into the turf. I actually think that was a good call."
