I think the way that we make sure Teddy's contract tolls is to do nothing and act like it has. If Teddy's agent puts a reasonable extension offer on the table, then we extend him. If only Keenum would take this contract...

This is the conundrum that all "wanna be GMs" will face in this thread. Either a) let Case walk, b) secure him for $24M franchise tag for only one year or c) pay him more than $24M guaranteed, but lock him up for multiple years.

Why do they have to pay him $24M??
If Shurmur stays and wants to give Case first shot at nailing down the starters job,then just maybe Case realizes his best shot to win is in Minnesota and would be happy to play for $20M

I would offer something similar to the Andy Dalton contract,but over a shorter time frame.Four years with the final year being a team option.$8M signing bonus, $3M roster bonus in years one and two.$1M in years three and four.There would also be escalators linked to playoff success that could add an extra $2M per year to the contract.

Dalton received $17M guaranteed to sign an extension when he still had one year remaining on his rookie contract (rising to $21M in the second year, when he would have become a FA), so you would be offering Case $6M less in guaranteed money when he is scheduled to immediately become a free agent after this season. If he would take it, great! That said, I don't think him and his agent would even consider this a legitimate offer.

It just depends how the Vikings see it. Is it the QB or the surrounding talent and system? I think I know what they lean towards. They don't need to overpay anyone, especially if they believe in Teddy as much as they say.

I'm becoming attached to Case, though ... it'll suck to lose him. Hopefully he's realistic about his talent and lack of good options elsewhere ... and he chooses to stick around with a fair contract.

Question is: What does he and his agent think is fair? 20+ million? Win some playoff games and we'll talk.

Free agency doesn't start until March 12th,so the Vikings are right not to rush things.
It's important to wait to see what happens with Shurmur before committing to any QBs.

You have to have figgy pudding between your ears to bid against yourself to the tune of 24M.

Case is the most reliable QB we got and I like the guy. His aggressiveness and Houdini factor are fun to watch, but I don't think he's worth 20+ million a year. Unless Teddy is our only other option. There's just no way Teddy can be our only option next year. That'll be a huge letdown and I would hope our franchise wasn't that stupid. So what stop gap guy do we turn to next year if Case is too expensive? We're in win now mode, so grooming a young QB would also be stupid at this point, as much as I can't wait to see what Sloter can do.

We're gonna have to wait for the offseason to determine that. Teddy's group is going to argue that he was healthy while he was on the PUP list this season so his contract doesn't toll, and the Vikings will try to secure one more cheap year on his deal. Don't know when this will happen though...

Teddy's contract should have a pretty big impact in what we offer Keenum as well. Ideally, it tolls and we keep him as a backup. In which case I'd throw Keenum an offer of about 3 years and 45M, draft a QB to groom, and ride with that trio for next year.

I wouldn't feel real comfortable with a rookie backup to Keenum next year unless it's a high end rook.
