Sam played ok, but his field vision still sucks, Many open receivers not seen.
I have a radical idea.
Let me know if you think it will work or not.
So since Sam has an issue with having Tunnel Vision on his first read, how about if KOC does the following :
He changes the first read on every passing down so Sam can focus on throwing the ball to that person.
That way he can have Addison, for example, as the first so Sam would focus on him and throw it to him while using Jets as a decoy.
Then on another Pass Play, he has TJ as the first option.
Next one, back to JJ.
Next one, to someone else.
And so forth.
It's a way to work around Sam's deficiencies in scanning the field.
What you just described is the scripted plays. The problem is Kevin staying committed to spreading the ball around and sticking with more shorter passes the rest of the game.
But over the last three games he absolutely has leaned more into the short passing game. When he does go away from it to feed Jefferson is when problems arise. Those problems have included suckage from Bustbary and Ingram. And Sam locking in on Jettas.
It has to be hard for an OC to not want to force feed the best Player in the NFL. People complain about Sam not seeing open guys, well that's what O'Connell knowingly signed up for.
Addison was the 3rd (or 4th) Read on the opposite side of the field from the primary read on the first Interception. There are less than 10 QBs in the NFL that would be able to stay alive and find him. On the second Interception Jordan looked to be running a deep over to clear out the middle for the dagger route to JJ that Darnold loves to throw. Addison's job was to open up that throw.
The problem was that the Colts knew that Sam loves throwing to Jefferson on dagger routes. Too predictable by Kevin there.
Where Sam is hurting the Vikings the most is not throwing the ball away and taking bad sacks and not seeing his checkdowns when the primary read is 10+ yards down the field. Darnold can clean up the sacks simply by being smarter. He's not going to see the open checkdowns because he's not going to be able to go through his progressions fast enough to get there.
That's where KOC has to do a better job of saving Sam from himself. And we're seeing signs of this starting to happen. Let's hope he can keep it going.
