Other Teama use Quick Game. The Jets spent 75% of the game in it. Kevin used it here and there throughout this season. Sometimes for chunks of a Drive. Same with running the Hurry Up.
After Minnesota went up 28-0, in part because they had success with Quick Game, O'Connell decided he's the next coming of Mike Martz orchestrating the Greatest Show on Turf.
Uncle , Danchat , WRs are capable of running shorter routes, right? It doesn't have to be Jones or Hockenson. Powell has done it. Sherfield has done it. Jefferson, Addison and Nailor have all done it.
Where are the Quick Slants? There were against both the 9ers and the Texans. Where are the TE Chip & Releases? Passes to the RB leaking out of the backfield? TE Shallow Crossers? Quick Outs like Addison had for 5 yards in the 2nd Half?
But most of all, why not try running it twice on 3rd and Short?
Dialing up chunk throws over and over again in short yardage situations isn't smart. It's predictable. Because he does it a ton. He's caught exactly zero Defensive Coordinators with their pants down. The times it has worked is solely because Jefferson is the best Receiver of this generation.
Why Sam Darnold is on his 4th Team was on full display today. I never said he wasn't capable of playing good football. He's INCONSISTENT. Sometimes within the same game. Sometimes going from one good one to one bad one. Today was bad. But the playcalling did him zero favors.
The playcalling also did the IOL zero favors. Asking them to hold up for over 3 seconds while Darnold tries to figure out which guy 10+ yards down the field is actually open against one of the best Secondaries in the League is bad coaching. I will say it again. Bad Coaching. Especially when your bell cow back goes out.
For 3 1/2 games I saw genuine improvement from Kevin William O'Connell. He had diversified the Offense. Revitalized the Running Game. Resurrected the Screen Game. The only recurring issue was getting the plays in late.
The last 6 Quarters Mr. Hyde has returned. Gets in Pressers and refuses to admit he's falling back into old behaviors. Unwilling to take what the Defense is giving him regardless of the situation. Quick to abandon plays once they get stopped a few times.
Just predictable. Without the QB to make it happen. KOC made improvements in the offseason. Can he self-diagnose that he's sliding back to his old ways on the fly? My gut says no. I think he's just too stubborn. We'll find out against Detroit.
Well stated and good points but I give KOC somewhat of a relief valve: (BTW if we lose Flores in the offseason it will be a disaster.) I also think some of the slop deserves to be spread around.
The running game returned to form and look like last years. Ty Chandler is not a work horse back and cant be trusted on third and one. Chandler is not much of a receiving threat and is best if you can get him out in space around the corner where he can use his speed. Thats a big if. Chandler just cant drop the hammer and turn on the jets in the running lanes. At least not very often. Averaged less than 3 yds per carry today.
The offensive line has improved in direct proportion because of the growth of one player Blake Brandel. Every thing else is the same. Until we get and an earth mover center who isnt flyweight like ours is, and a solid right guard to replace Ingram these 3rd and shorts are going to continue to haunt us.
Did Josh Oliver play today? I couldnt find him. He started out the year with a really nice catch but maybe this guy just cant get open.
I think KOC was especting more out of Addison and Nailor and so was I.
JJ hasnt been his normal super man self these last two weeks where he catches everything like a fly to flypaper.
Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner is the best cover corner in the league. But the one reason not to like him is that all little people in the NFL get injured. Gardner went out in the third.
On a positive side. Gilmore has been a treasure this year. He almost got burnt on one play but Rodgers missed the reciever. Watch Gilmore a little closer. When they threw the flag on him today it is was questionable. His anticipation and ability to use his hands to jar the ball loose is a special talent. In a flash cube moment he does it and almost always wins. The other new corner we never hear his number called. Special to me cuz we have sucked at corner for so long. So wrong to go after Gilmore in clutch time. Why not go after Murphy Jr, other teams do and win the catch a lot of times.
