Patrick Mahomes had 500 yard passing games in college. McCarthy was lucky if he hit 200. They are not the same quarterbacks. We knew what Mahomes had in college. We don't know anything yet of McCarthy.
Only the Chiefs knew about Mahomes. Nobody, and I mean Nobody had him penciled in as the next generational QB.
Lots of QBs put up big yardage in Air Raid systems. It's actually become a knock because so many of them don't work out. McCarthy ran a Pro Style System. He was one of the top QBs in throws over the middle of the field, which is where O'Connell's Offensd leads the NFL in attempts. He took more snaps from under Center than any of the other QBs.
In almost every measurable way McCarthy came from a system and made the throws that fit what Kevin wants better than anyone else in the Draft. That's facts. Reporters from multiple outlets said JJ has a better arm than Sam. Facts. Sam will cost at least 35 million next year while McCarthy is on a Rookie deal. More facts. The primary Vikings beat reporter posted that he'd heard that JJ was on pace to start much earlier than anticipated. More facts.
What you have is a nice 4 game run in a vacuum. Ignoring that Sam has had good runs before and turned into a pumpkin every time. Ignoring what it would cost to keep him. Really, ignoring everything but the fear of failure, which is what all Vikings fans struggle with.
JJ has a higher ceiling. The Pros of seeing if he reaches it outweigh the Cons of poneying up big money for what could easily turn out to be a 1 Year Wonder.
If Sam continues to ball like he has, the compensation from the non-exclusive tag or a tag/trade scenario is more found money. Take it and run with it, even if by some miracle Sam is hosting a lombardi for us in Feb. Put a better team around JJM. But paying Sam 30-35M/season puts us right back where we were with Kirk.
