Sometimes, what is possible actually happens. The Vikings crushed a mediocre Giants team and beat a good 49ers team despite two turnovers.
Postives from this game especially:
- The Offense is both solid and explosive. The running game is working with both Jones and Chandler. The line seems better with Brandel. Nailor is a great addition. Clutch catch on 3rd and long, two wide open TDs... Brandon Powell gets open on key 3rd downs and contributes. Jets with two huge pass plays. Darnold has a very good arm and he is not playing scared. Darnold is more mobile than Kirk and he keeps drives going. The screen game does not suck! KO keeps getting better as a play caller. Finally, Darnold is not the failed 3rd pick in the draft that he was made out to be. The Vikings are winning with Darnold, and they beat a very solid 49ers team despite All-Pro Fred Warner causing two turnovers. Vikings score 33 against a team without a Fred Warner.
- The Defense is legit. 49ers have a strong running game, and the Vikings run defense got better as the game went on. The pass defense is much improved and the Red Zone defense is downright tough. Cashman contests balls and makes short passes over the middle much more difficult; Cashman's pass D led to the Metellus INT. Van Ginkel makes another huge play with a deflection on a key 3rd down at the end of the game. He almost had another INT. Multiple players are getting pressure. They are getting sacks and turnovers.
- Special Teams contributes with a blocked punt.
This team plays with confidence. They are not surprised they are good.
Injuries are always a factor and key guys need to heal. When Jets, Addison, Nailor, and Hockenson are healthy, how good can this passing game be?
This start to the season is a pleasant surprise. Let's enjoy it.
The Vikings can beat a good Houston team at Home next week.
