Spotlight on the O-line
We haven’t talked a ton about the Vikings offensive line in the last month or so, and that’s because, well, talk is cheap during training camp for this group. In days, Dexter Lawrence II, Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux will be breathing down the necks of Christian Darrisaw, Blake Brandel, Garrett Bradbury, Ed Ingram and Brian O’Neill. Want to inspire confidence? Fend off a pass rush that pressured quarterback Kirk Cousins 35 times in two matchups in 2022.
Darrisaw and O’Neill should hold their own, but questions persist on the interior. The Vikings view Brandel as a capable pass protector with movement ability in the running game. But he has played more than 500 snaps since 2021 and received below-average grades, according to Pro Football Focus. Bradbury has improved yearly, but he is by no means perfect. Ingram also progressed in 2023 but was still graded below average.
The Vikings brass has not raised much concern over the group’s performance in recent years. They constantly highlight the continuity of the group, which makes sense given they have more of a load pre-snap than they had in the past with Cousins. Regardless, it’s unavoidable that most of the team’s priorities for 2024 — an improved run game, Sam Darnold exceeding expectations, etc. — hinge on this group’s performance.
By the winter, if the offense is sputtering, this is likely the position group we’ll look back on and wonder if they should have done more to improve in the offseason.
