Each August, The Athletic's Bruce Feldman releases a list of the top college football "athletes" - which isn't necessarily a list of the top players, but more of a listing of the college players with the most athletic abilities. Not all players on the list are Draft-eligible for the following year's Draft, but I always reference this list when I start to get into "Draft mode" during the Bowl season and into the leadup to The Combine (you can always get a sense of who will perform well during athletic testing using Feldman's list).
Here is a link to the 2024 list, where Feldman writes a bit about each player: link
If you don't want to click on the link and just want to know the players, I've listed out all 101 players in the below table along with their class (FR=Freshman, RS=Redshirt, etc), positions, team, conference and if they're eligible for the 2025 Draft - the bolded players are eligible for the 2025 Draft:
BY THE NUMBERS
The reason I put the list of players in an Excel table is just so I can quickly analyze the numbers and here they are:
TAKEAWAYS
- A popular position by fans to use the Vikings 2025 1st Rd pick on is DT, and it appears there will be no shortage of "athletic" DT's next Spring
- If the Vikings decide to use their 2025 3rd Rd comp (from the Cousins signing) on IOL, there's a decent # of athletic IOL, too
- It is interesting that the schools with the most "Freaks" are BIG10 schools and not the SEC. While Feldman's list isn't indicative of which schools have more athletic football players, the general rule of thumb for a while has been the SEC has the better and more athletic players, so perhaps there might be a slight shift towards the BIG10 after the influx of former PAC-12 schools (UCLA, USC, Oregon & Washington).
- 64 players have at least 4 years of college experience by the time the 2025 Draft will roll around (RS JR, SR, RS SR) and Redshirt Seniors (RS SR) have the most of any Class, which is indicative of the current state of college football with NIL running rampant - Juniors who aren't guaranteed to go on Day 1 or Day 2 would rather transfer in college and collect some NIL money before declaring
