I'm not generally included amongst the "Teddy apologists," but hopefully I can answer as well?It all depends on the #2 situations. If Teddy gets the nod for a week or two because Case stubs his toe, then he is on a very short leash. Anything less then Case-level performance will have him back on the bench. It Teddy gets the nod because Case goes on IR, then we pretty much sink or swim with him (at least until playoffs when Sam could again be an option - likely not). If Case just starts to suck, then the less sucky guy should be on the field. Pretty much same as it ever was......
This situation is not entirely different then 1987 when, going into the Wildcard game in NO, Jerry Burns refused to name a starting QB and told the media that "both QBs will play" (Tommy Kramer and Wade Wilson). That became true when, although Kramer started, Kramer took some hell Ashish hits and Wade relieved him. The rest is history. NO and SF games were two of the finest playoff memories we have. If only Darrin Nelson could have hung onto that ball and got us to OT in Washington.
But he's likely to be smack dab in the middle somewhere. Again I'll ask, if his performance is essentially unchanged from 2015, he's sub-average statistically and can't handily beat teams we should dominate and can't win playoff games, do we keep him in anyway? Do we settle for sub-average performance if we aren't winning playoff games? If so, for how long?
Here's what i think: He should get a game or two to shake off any rust, unless he's Bradford-Bears awful then he loses that benefit of doubt. If Teddy 's numbers are essentially unchanged from 2015 after 5 or 6 games, and he doesn't show consistent signs of that upside and improvement people talk about, then we know what we have in him.
What I'm not willing to do is let him finish out this season with a poor playoff showing and install him as the starter for all of next year if he hasn't shown significant improvement in key areas, like TDs per game, long ball accuracy and red zone efficiency. The reason I asked this question is because I think some people are willing to do just that, simply because he's a nice guy.
I agree 100%. A decent part of why I want him playing is because this year's QB class might be the best we see for a long time - if we're hitching our wagon to Teddy I want to know what he can do. And if he can't do more than he was before his injury...I want to move on. (And I'd like to see significantly more)
