Since I don't want to completely hijack he Darnold thread, I'll post this here.
So why was there never a top 5 offense finish? Why not many let me guess because his LG stunk. With us he stayed with 2 top WRs, a top RB until the last two, two A1 OTs last few years and TEs. Yet can’t make the playoffs mane come on Rap.You don't need a top 5 offense to win the Super Bowl. Top 10 helps. Tell me. How many points would he have had to score? I guess having 3 of the top 5 scoring offenses in Vikings history wasn't enough he needed all 5 and more than what they had. After all, the offense wins. Right? Which is why the Chiefs won last year with the 15th-ranked offense. And Manning in Denver with the 19th. But they are elite.
Funny how most "Elite" QBs win the Super Bowl with top defenses. Brady, Montana, Manning, Mahomes, Rodgers, Favre, Aikman. The list goes on.
Let's see, how many teams have won a Super Bowl with their defense ranked 20 or greater? 3 (The Manning boys and Brees)
Vikings' defense rank the last 4 years. 29th, 24th, 28th, 13th
How many teams have won with a defense that gave up more points than their offense scored? 1 (Eli)
The average point difference in the last 20 years for Super Bowl winners. 119. The last 4 years? 109
The point difference for the Vikings the last 4 years. -45, -1, ,- 3, -18
What's the average score on defense per game for the teams that won the Super Bowl over the last 20 years? 18.75 The last 4 years. 20.8
What's the average score on defense for the Vikings per game over the last 4 years, 25.2
Cousin's best chance was 2019. But that revolving door of Defensive and offensive coordinators after 2019 didn't help. One year you have a defense giving up 19 points a game, and the next year they give up 30 ppg. But damn Kirk, he's not elite enough to make up that difference.
Brady is considered elite. But throughout his career, his defense averaged 18.8 ppg.
Joe Montana's defense averages 17.1 ppg.
Payton Manning's defense. 20.5
Mahome's defense. 21.2
Cousins, 24.
On offense, in Minnesota, Cousins has scored 24.9 ppg, and 24.2 in his career. Montana was 24.4 ppg
But defense isn't part of what makes a QB elite, right? But it's a hell of a lot easier to win if you don't have to score 25 ppg to do it.
Signed, Broken record.
Well, be prepared to have a disappointing season. By week 7 people here will be clamoring for JJ to start. And if we make the playoffs, it won't be because of Darnold.
