On the other hand, Baker Mayfield - on a 1-yr, $4m deal with the Buccaneers - helped guide a Tampa Bay team to a 9-8 record, a home playoff win over the Eagles and a tight game vs the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Round, which he parlayed into a 3-yr, $100m extension...
I think it's reasonable to assume that if Darnold had a similar season in Minnesota in 2024 that he could also parlay that into a sizeable, multi-year starting QB contract in the 2025 offseason on the open market.
At least Mayfield showed he had playoff talent prior to last year having taken Cleveland of all teams to the playoffs before they got stupid and decided to hand the future to a guy who has done nothing but cost the team money.
Darnold has shown nothing on any team he has been on other than he gets hurt a lot and he throws more INTs than is ideal for a QB.
Darnold is a bridge QB, and hopefully one of the better ones. But many a coaching staff and fanbase have convinced themselves that their bridge QB could be the guy just to watch them fail / get injured and watch the rookie QB take the reins. Given Darnold's durability issues in the NFL, I am considering a PPA prediction along the lines of 'Darnold gets injured and McCarthy starts and does not relinquish the job'.
