Reading a lot of angst about the depth of the Roster now that the Draft & UDFA are finished by very good posters that I am struggling to understand, so I thought it would be a good idea to look at each position and see where there are differences in opinions.
QB: No needs.
RB: RB3 is a need. All the guys I liked aside from Blake Watson went in that interminable no-mans land between #108 and #177. They can ink one of like 6 guys who've logged actual NFL carries that are always always available in FA and revisit next Draft.
WR: WR4 is a need. A higher need than RB3 to me.
TE: No needs.
OT: Rouse easily replaces Udoh as the second Swing Tackle off the bench. No word about trying him at Guard but as a Oli replacement who didn't allow a sack this feels like a nice addition. With upside beyond that, IMO.
IOL: None of us had Jurgens so he sucks, right? He wasn't invited to an All-Star Game nor was he invited to the Combine. But he's flat out bigger than Garrett Bradbury. And PFF absolutely loved him at Left Guard this year after spending multiple years starting at Center.
Dylan McMahon was drafted earlier. His arm length and overall size are in the bottom 10th percentile to be successful in the NFL. Jurgens is bigger in every aspect but also known as more of a technician than a physical player. Get him stronger and I think he's got a higher ceiling than Schlottman and Feeney.
This position needs reinforcements after Roster cuts but I truly think most of you are dismissing a kid PFF absolutely loves.
Special Teams: Reichard ends that discussion. No more gnashing of the teeth over PTAs and Field Goals in the 30-40 yard range. He's about as good in the 40-50 range. More projection than production over 50. It's the Extra Points and the reliability I covet. O'Connell goes for it a ton so the 50+ yards stuff isn't as important to me. And it's not like he hasn't made some big ones.
Get someone to battle Wright and you're fine.
I personally believe GMs need to see how the new Kickoff Format works before you start actually targeting Returner as a skillset at all. Kene is fine to get the first crack at it.
Edge: They were set after Turner. But then went and got Murphy. Andre Carter II is a freak athlete with tons of production that needed a redshirt year in the Pros to add NFL strength. Gabriel Murphy had great production with bad measurables. Short arms. Not crazy explosive. What a great counterbalance to Carter. But again, both were highly productive in college, so it's not a 'totally raw athlete vs. great producer but lesser athlete' thing.
In the End (get it) I have it as Hunter>Greenard, Turner>Davenport, AVG>Wonnum and let Carter and Murphy compete to knock Jones II off the Team.
IDL: This just wasn't the year. Bad Draft Class. Possibly why they were runner up for Wilkins. Most of these kids were much, much better against the run than the pass.
Kwesi went with quantity over quality here. But all Tillery has to do is actually record tackles in the Box Score and he's an upgrade over Lowry. Which means less pass rushing snaps for Bullard at the least and maybe even Phillips. Roy will get a long look now that Lynch is gone. Taki gets a look at the run stuffer only niche role that Flores didn't Ike Tonga in. Jonah Williams gets 5i snaps while Rodriguez is a complete dart throw.
Again, bad Draft for IDL. Guys like Maason Smith went way too early with no more production than guys that were UDFAs. I'm not getting upset about that. If the IDL stuffs the run as well as last year the upgrades to the rest of the Defense should cover the lack of pass rushing.
ILB: Cashman is a 3 Down ILB. Pace isn't that good against the run in short yardage but absolutely was improving far more in coverage than I expected. And Blake is clearly better than Hicks in coverage at this point in Jordan's career.
Asamoah should be ILB3 but health has become a concern. Dallas Gant intrigues but there's a darn good chance a more than serviceable veteran becomes an option at some point. What Hicks did the best for Flores was stuff the run and blitz. ILBs that can't cover are factually not en vogue in the League right now. And that's what Jordan was last year. I have a very hard time believing not spending a 6th or 7th on that limited and lowly valued skillset is a sound criticism of the Day 3 selections.
CB: Khyree Jackson ended this debate. He's the antithesis physically from Mekhi Blackmon. I freaking love this pick. One or both or both of Evans and Booth are gone when you factor in the potential of McGlothern.
S: Not a need.
My biggest concern is WR. I think Powell is OK as WR3 when TJ Hockenson is playing. As WR2 if Addison of Jetas goes down? Yikes. I expect a legit veteran signing here.
The IDL is there to stuff the run and keep the ILBs and Safeties clean. That's what they did last year. Phillips and Bullard should see less snaps in obvious passing downs now that Flores literally has at least two more players available to move inside on 3rd & Long. And more blitzing options.
The IOL is a concern. It's always a concern. Fix it next year in Free Agency. There's more than enough quality players to get it done regardless of cost. But the backup spots were filled instead of ignored. Rouse is an upgrade over Lowe and potentially Udoh. I like Jurgens more than Kyle Hinton at least and not as ready to discount him as most. Feeney sucks, but I thought the same thing about Schlottman and he became serviceable after getting coached up by the Vikings.
What else am I missing? Day 3 is largely about finding Special Teams guys that can hopefully develop into legitimate competition to be backups with maybe 1 future Starter. Reading the Day 3 thread makes it sound like Minnesota didn't select anyone who's going to make the Roster.
