Just wanted to do a quick thread on what I would hope the Vikings would do with #23 if they end up keeping it. As I have done in past pre-draft articles, I will give an arbitrary letter grade on what I would think of every pick:
This is assuming they spend the earlier pick on a QB.
DT Murphy II / Newton / EDs Verse / Latu / Turner - Landing any of these guys would be amazing for the defense that hasn't seen a prospect of this caliber since... Sharrif Floyd? Instant A+ grade.
DE Chop Robinson - I like him as a toolsy pick with a super high ceiling. Grade: B
DL Darius Robinson - I've soured a bit on him as he is a tweener who I don't think belongs in Round 1. If you love him, trade down first. Grade: C-
Any of the elite WR/TE - this shouldn't happen but I'd still give them an A+ for taking a blue chip talent at #23.
Any other WR/TE - the Vikings have already spent tons of capital on these two positions, and I don't love any of the WRs at #23 even if we had a need. This WR is stacked, so Day 2 is a better place to spend that. Grade: F
CB Mitchell / Arnold - We've taken way too many DBs the past 5 years in the draft, but they do badly need a true #1 CB and I love Mitchell. Arnold profiles well too. Grade: A-
CB DeJean / McKinstry - I don't see these guys as shutdown CBs in the league but would be useful players. DeJean's safety versatility is nice but very much not needed. Grade: C
CB Wiggins / another CB - I'm so done with taking borderline 1st round CBs in the 20s. Let's not make that mistake again. Grade: D/F
Any safety / linebacker / RB - Grade: F------
OL - I think #23 is too high to take a guard in this class. There is a lot of fascination with Graham Barton as a guard and he'd be leagues better than Brandel. But they could trade down and still land a quality guard. Some other tackles could move to guard easily but I don't have time to hash that out. Grade: ranges from C to F.
Thoughts?
