I don't know if upper tier 2 is worth a top 10 or even day 1 pick, but I get it, he wasn't getting past Denver, but that supports the desperation theory.
A tier 2 QB is absolutely worth a top 10 pick because of the contract. McCarthy will be on about a 4 year $21M deal which is incredible value given the comparison Dak Prescott makes $40M a year and is looking for $60M on his next deal. If McCarthy pans out, 2025-2028 could be an open window for this team to become an actual Super Bowl contender. There still is a lot of work to be done on this roster and they need to start drafting better, but they are finally on a path to legitimate contention that they should have embarked on in 2020.
Or you could go the Falcons route and sign a past-prime mid tier 2 QB to a $45M a year deal and then not improve the roster by drafting his replacement who will take over at age 26-28. And be committing about $53M a year to the QB position compared to the Vikings' $5M + whatever a backup costs in 2025-2027.
It's not entirely their fault though, nobody was willing to trade, or the asking price was way too high. I don't know if Spielman tried to move up in 2011, or who he preferred over Ponder. McCarthy might be better than Ponder, but the situation gives me deja vu.
Unlike Ponder, McCarthy is actually a consensus 1st rounder by most sources, at worst a borderline 1st/2nd. Arif's mega consensus board confirms this. If anything, he profiles closer to Bridgewater stock-wise.
If anybody is Ponder here, it's the Broncos taking QB6 Bo Nix at #12. Literally at the same spot Ponder went. He was a consensus early 2nd. You could argue that for Penix too though he had quite a bit more backing him as a 1st rounder.
