They opted to take their quarterback of the future by taking Penix. He has all the tools, but will learn and wait behind Kirk Cousins. I wonder if he can rush the passer. Like the player, but don't like the pick. Grade: B

10. Vikings: J.J. McCarthy, QB, Michigan
Grade: C+
They had to fill the quarterback spot, so it makes sense to take McCarthy. I don't love him as much as others do, but it will be interesting to see how Kevin O'Connell and company will make it work.

12. Broncos: Bo Nix, QB, Oregon
Grade: C-
I don't love Nix, but I get the pick. Desperation forces teams to pick quarterbacks earlier than they should. Sean Payton obviously sees Drew Brees in him, but this is way early. Why not trade down and get him later?

Falcons with the biggest reach and also the most likely to not get anything out of their pick in Year One. I'll be sure to not pay attention to what this guy has to say in the future.

At least two years before Penix even has a chance of sniffing the field based on the contract they gave Kirk.

It is just the way of the NFL now. If you don't have that QB1 right, you have nothing. If the Vikings believe JJ McCarthy is their guy then that was chump-change they gave to move up to get him ahead of another team (a very real possibility). If that is your guy you get him. Period. That dude is a priceless asset to your franchise. JMO.

Daniel Jeramiah just said Kirk wasn't aware of the Penix pick, no heads up according to Kirk's agent.

This is a great draft so far...

Kirk will have to fight real competition to start
JJM to the Vikings for basically the 2nd 4th Round pick and a 5/6 round swap (only 13 point difference on Rich Hill chart for a QB)
Nix goes to Payton and is the 6th QB taken
14 picks in and no defensive player yet. Vikings can get a DL, Edge, or CB
