KO and the QBOTF - JJ McCarthy

This has been beaten into the ground already

If we had stayed put we may or may not have gotten JJ. We will never know. I was right that we would attempt to trade up to the top 5, but we were smart enough to not offer enough to get it done. Reports are we were offering 11-23 and our 25 FRP, but we were requiring this years and next years 3 round picks from NE. They declined and we dodged a bullet.

To my surprise we were smart enough to not offer on picks 4-5-6-7 and once getting there we started offering again on picks 8 and 10. I was absolutely right that we didn't need to give up 3 FRPs to get what I considered a top notch QB prospect. I was perfectly OK with giving up a 4th and a 5th for 6th swap to make sure we got McCarthy. He was my 3rd rated QB in the draft. If we did not trade up for McCarthy and somebody else did I would have been fine with Nix also. He was my 4th rated QB in the draft.

Time will tell who was right and who was wrong about the order/quality of these prospects. Maybe Maye will become a superstar and JJ and Nix will suck. I hope we find out I was right in my QB rankings. 

I never said they can’t be happy with him. The conversation was whether the value they placed on both of them. I was maintaining that as the metric for discussion while others moved the goalposts to try and score some imaginary points.

I will admit it’s possible that the Vikings only offered what they gave up for Mac to the Pats and that’s why they didn’t get Maye. If that’s the case then I’ll agree they valued each the same.

How they “valued “ the two and whether they are “happy“ with Mac are not the same argument but some are trying to make it so.

If someone took Mac and they had drafted Nix because that’s who was left there is no question in my mind they would be “happy” with him as well at this point of the season.

Every team is thrilled with every draft pick every year of course. If you can believe the rumored offer to NE you are correct that we valued Maye significantly more than we valued McCarthy. Based on us giving up the 4th round pick and the 5th for 6th swap to get pick 10 there is no question whatsoever that we preferred McCarthy to Nix. Did we significantly prefer McCarthy to Nix? Maybe, but not very much based on what we paid for the move up. 

why are you patting yourself on the back?

well to be fair you were also happy with any QB that we would have taken at 11. You were also steadfast that Maye wasn't an elite prospect but at least 3 teams were willing to take him at #3 so don't pull a hamstring on your victory lap
