Spencer Rattler?

Two stat lines. One is the top draft pick in the 2024 draft, the other worked his way off the team.

And people wonder why I don't pay much attention to what people say before the draft.

Yup, the year he played himself off the team. That's the whole point. He played himself off the team stats compared to Williams's top-draft pick stats. Those are William's numbers from 2023. The real question is how many people know which one is which without looking it up?  My bet is very few.  But then the Offense in OK Scoring 43.9 ppg that year, he had nothing to do with it.  How much did USC score per game this past year?   Oh yeah,  41.8 ppg.  All on Williams I'm sure.

I was thinking the same thing.  Rattler got replaced at Oklahoma by the QB who's going to go first overall this year.  He went to a mediocre team in the SEC where he faced some of the best defenses in the country and completed 68% of his passes and had a great td/interception ratio.  I'm not saying he's a sure bet to make it, but I like the package of pick 11, pick 23, and Rattler better than no pick 11, no pick 23, no first round pick in 2025, and the 3rd or 4th QB selected in this year's draft.  Especially when you consider there could be 4 or 5 QBs and at least 1 WR taken in the top 10.  That means only about 4 other position players will be off the board at pick 11.  We could get the 1st player off the board at most of these positions: LB, DT, DE, OT, OG, CB, Safety.  Even pick 23 could have a lot of good players left at these positions.  They say it's a deep draft for WRs which means a lot of them may go between picks 12 and 22.  All of the QBs that we would potentially pick if we move up are ranked significantly lower in the player rankings.  I've heard most of them are ranked between 50 and 75 overall by a lot of draft gurus.  Why risk giving up that much for these guys.  There may be other mid-tier QBs they could get if Rattler isn't the guy, but to me he was pretty impressive playing on a not-so-great team against many of the top teams in the country.

No, Rattler's sophomore year was the one where he played himself off the team. And his numbers still weren't bad compared to other QBs, but he struggled enough to earn his benching.


I'm not arguing that he had nothing to do with it, he had a strong freshman year. But other college QBs with a similar history of never replicating the success from their freshman year go on to be busts a majority of the time.


I have seen Rattler noted at 6'0" which is the 10th percentile height for QBs, whereas Williams' height of 6'1" 1/8th is at the 27th. And for weight, Rattler is in the 13th percentile compared to Williams' 44th.

Williams is undersized and that could be a problem, but Rattler is even more so. The lack of athleticism as Uncle noted for Rattler is an even bigger problem with his small stature - the likes of other small QBs like Wilson and Murray can fall back on their athleticism while Rattler likely won't be able to.
