Rookie Quarterbacks - Who is your preference?

We don't really know how the Vikings have these guys ranked internally which makes that a difficult question. They might have Maye and McCarthy as their 2-3 guys, or even have one of them at 1 because Williams has a few warts too. That withstanding we can't just say 3rd, 4th or 5th guy as a negative. That 3rd guy in this year's draft could be the 1st guy if he was in next years draft. This is a fairly top heavy draft for QB's so the 3rd or 4th guy may not be such a negative.

I keep coming back to give it your best shot. At a different position I would be lockstep with you. Say Edge rusher or DT. If there were 3-5 high quality ones to choose from I wouldn't be banging the table to go get one over the other because the separation wouldn't justify it. At QB it's different. We've seen what happens when you have one who's really good but not great. There's also a situational aspect here. A lot of my desire for this is based on the present situation. We have the best WR in the league, a damn good number 2 and a pretty nice number 3. When TJ gets back there's a really good TE too. We've got a nice set of bookend Tackles, though I wish the middle of the oline was better. We've got a coaching staff that has two guys who've played the position in the league and understand the pitfalls to guide him and a former high pick QB who failed to help steer him too.

If we didn't have that I would be advocating a safer approach. Environment plays a part in the success or failure of a QB. A lot of good QB prospects have been ruined being dropped in crappy situations where they had nothing to work with.

A rookie here, has a lot more than a high pick would usually benefit from. Maybe a Nix or Penix would do alright, but they have a lower ceiling as it looks right now. I would rather gamble on a guy who might be the kind of QB to carry a team vs settle for one who is just a good driver.

It's a calculated gamble I'm ready to take. I've only been on this Purple pain train for 32 years so I'm not nearly as tenured as others, I'm just tired of the safe plays. I'm tired of this franchise treating QB as "oh yeah, we need to get one of those" instead of going and getting the one they want. For one the very few times I can recall they seem to have identified a few they like and are positioning to go get one instead of picking one from the bargain bin. This isn't Rick losing his nerve and panic picking Ponder because he missed the rush. This group has been studying this class since they came in and working towards something. I have to give them the benefit of the doubt that this is a heavily calculated risk for someone they really like and not a panic move.

I am 99% confident we won't get any compensation in tampergate. The Falcons might get punished, but we won't benefit. If, however we could benefit I would say a swap of our 11 for their 8 would be reasonable. Even if next years #1 isn't included I still hate giving up 11 and 23 to get 5 or 4, but unfortunately I expect it to happen. The trade I see as most likely is a 3 way with the Cards and Chargers. We get 4, the Cards get 5 and some minimal additional compensation and the Chargers get 11 and 23. The Cards love it because they still get Harrison, the Chargers like it because they were never getting Harrison anyway and 11 and 23 is a lot. We pick Maye or McCarthy whichever one is there. 

Simms is the best QB evaluator in the biz period.
