Im convinced. Penix throws the best darts of anyone in the draft. This guy has been so trashed. Total gunslinger. I remember when Kenny Stabler threw passes. (Before your time). Penix has a far better arm than Stabler ever did. Big shift to go to a lefty, but he is the bargain of the draft. Besides, what quarterback of the big four can you get a handle on his ability after one year? Only Penix. The rest could be in the league for 3 or 4 years and then they are Justin Fields.
Come one FSU you got a good eye for talent. This guy rings all the bells. His fingers and wrist can flick the ball 30 yards. Sit at 11 and get Penix.
I'm 53, lol. Of course I remember Stabler. We have the same first name and I thought the Raiders Silver & Black unis were cool so I was a fan. Plus the super cool nickname.
I have a decent eye for talent. But I also have a big ear for dissenting opinions by people who evaluate talent for a living. FYI, I also evaluate talent for a living, just not for Sports.
Penix is really good at reading Defenses and deciding where to go with the ball pre-snap. So is Nix. Which is why they didn't take a lot of sacks. That's a good thing.
What's bad is that when he reads the Defense wrong and gets pressured he's toast. Unlike Nix, Michael won't vacate the pocket and make off-platform throws. His eyes come down too fast. What happened against Michigan was an outlier in terms of how many times it occurred. But there were plenty of examples throughout the season. And Michigan ran the most NFL-style Defense Penix saw all year.
There's also that thing where he's awesome at throwing bombs to the sidelines. Something the Vikings, like most Teams, don't do a ton since the field isn't as wide outside the numbers in the NFL and the Corners are way better.
Penix was dead last out of the Top 6 QBs in percentage of throws over the MOF from 11-20 yards. The Vikings were #2 in number of pass attempts in that window.
Michael can slide in the pocket and has a canon. But the accuracy isn't ideal. And he can get flustered when he misreads simulated pressure and gets pressured. Minnesota has a nasty habit of allowing interior pressure. And Penix isn't great at throwing over the MOF.
Frankly, Bo Nix is a better fit despite the lesser arm. But I trust O'Connell and would be thrilled with Murphy or Newton at #11 and Penix at #23.
I'd just be more thrilled with Maye at #3 regardless of the cost. McCown will fix his sloppy footwork. And imagine if Drake stayed in College and transferred to a better school like say Ohio State and put up insane numbers throwing to 1st Round WRs behind excellent protection like Daniels, Penix & Nix. He'd be a guaranteed #1 overall pick.
Instead, he played for a school that didn't care about him developing bad footwork habits that had terrible pass protection and not a lot of talent to throw to. Downs two years ago and Walker for part of this year. Maye had to carry that. No difference at all to what Penix had to carry at Indiana, Nix had to carry at Auburn and Daniels had to carry at Arizona State.
Except Drake played his way into being discussed as one of the top two QB Prospects in this Draft for two years straight while those other guys had to transfer to more advantageous situations in order to see their stock rise. Big difference.
