^That is very interesting. I was curious what exactly the "clerical accounting error" was and PFT had this to say: "...payroll accounting errors at the close of 2022 [that] resulted in a misreporting of the club’s cumulative player compensation.”
A couple thoughts here:
- So this payroll accounting error occurred at the close of the 2022 season, and while the report doesn't say when the NFL found the error, the fact that it took this long to administer the punishment is a bit embarrassing, IMO. We all know the NCAA takes forever to hand out punishments when universities break rules (ie, mainly recruiting violations), but this is just as bad. I'd say someone needs to dock Goodell's payroll for the league taking so long.
- Knowing how long it took for the NFL to conclude and administer punishment in this situation, I wouldn't expect any Cousins'-tampering resolutions to be handed down by the end of this calendar year.
- I do wish there was a bit more clarity as to the specifics of what happened. Ok, so SF didn't fully report player compensation at the end of the 2022 season: was that so they could roll-over more cap into 2023? Was it so they didn't have to pay out some sort of incentives, or didn't want to report incentives baked into contracts for cap purposes? I'd like to know what the goal was for SF because the fact that SF didn't complain at all means they knew what they were doing and it simply wasn't just "an error" by someone in SF's Front Office mis-typing a "0" instead of a "9". John Lynch is well publicized on his views of playing the "comp pick game" (it's part of his draft/player-personnel strategy) so I wouldn't put it past him to come up with some way to "game" the cap by underreporting something so he could rollover more cap to the following year - just wish I knew what exactly they were trying to do.
- It's not a massive hit - they move down a few spots at the end of the 4th Rd and get docked a 5th Rd pick in 2025 - but I have to assume that someone in the SF Front Office is going to take some heat for this. As mentioned earlier, SF GM John Lynch has openly stated the comp picks are part of his player-personnel strategy and he has the cap guys in Draft meetings to work the numbers, so I'm wondering if one of those cap guys is going to pay the price.
