I see a lot of blame for the poor rushing attack on the interior of the oline.
While it isn't close to the level of Detroit's, 2/3rds of it blocked for the #5 RB in 2021, and all 3 blocked for the #6 one in 2022.
The biggest issue was who started for most of the season. Mattison is at best a #3 RB on a contender. It is why we got him back for so cheap after no one made him an offer in free agency and it is why the Vikings desperately need to upgrade that position this off season. Not with another mediocre RB like Akers, but with a guy with actual upside.
I hate to be the guy who says "I told you so"(not because I don't like being right, but because in this case being right was bad for the Vikings) but going into the season I told you all that you would come to see the value of having actual talent at RB. We have seen how having no talent actually goes, let's get our guy in the draft and never forget how much having mediocre RBs sucks.
I'm not sure which is worse, Mattison or the line. Mattison isn't a fit of the scheme being run, and for that matter, neither is the line. Mattison was definitely a part of our RZ woes. Chandler was a step up there, but I think most would agree he's probably not a RB1 either. Better line play might help him a bit more. Regardless, we don't have AP in his prime. If Risner is being retained, then I have to think that at the very least upgrading Bradburry would be a good step there which might allow for some improvement, but we would still need a RB that complements KOC's scheme.
My bigger concern is that I'm not sure KOC can identify the right talent to do all of that. He didn't have to bring Mattison back. More could have been done to address the IOL too. We went out and got Oliver and then didn't adjust the running game at all to use him to his strengths. That's on the play caller.
