The draft is the life line. There I’m trying to get QB and all positions. It’s not an either or you draft for a QB and every thing else all at the same time and each year.
That's why I don't understand those who complain about Cousins' cap hit hurting our ability to pursue free agents. Who are we going to acquire that is going to push us over the top? It's ironic that the only time the Vikings really went all out for one of the "Tier 1" FAs, it was Cousins. That didn't work, but if we drop his cap we can get some FA or FAs that will do the trick?
What exactly makes Kevin O'Connell a QB guru? A QB whisperer! How do you become a guru? Are those made-up BS titles that have permeated the internet with little to no meaning whatsoever? Can we please refrain from using the term guru or whisperer? It sounds cheap and or weak.
But I agree with Drank that there are coaches who are great with quarterbacks and make them better by improving their skills and/or creating a system that maximizes their abilities. Reid was one and I think he should get about 80% of the credit for Mahomes being the player he is now. Both the Harbaughs fit. And look no further than Denny Green, who got the best out of at least half a dozen quarterbacks.
Free agency is a nice tool though. Not necessarily the highest priced moves but good ones.
We have had some nice free agents picked up. Winfield, phat Pat, Linval to name a few. Even low key ones like a Shiancoe. You draft well then use free agency strategically. You won’t be perfect drafting plus sometimes the draft weak in a area of need and with several needs it can be hard to hit all positions adequately. Another team building option but more of a buffer option instead of your bread and butter
