Yeah, some of you guys need to step away from the edge of the cliff. Yes, things don't look great right now, but this is a year to year league. The Lions look solid, but there is a reason they didn't get the #1 seed and got blown out a few times this year. Don't get me wrong, they are a good team, but they were 2 points away from extending that playoff win drought for another year.
The Packers have played a lot better, but there was a reason why their defense ranked near the bottom of the league during the season. Hell, they ALMOST lost to the friggin Panthers near the end of the year. Jordan Love looks really good but he's also had a lot of time to throw and a lot of wide open receivers lately. I'm interested to see how well he does against the 9ers' defense.
The Bears are interesting. I actually think it would be a mistake to stick with Fields. He had one of his best games in his 2nd game against us this year and he still couldn't find the end zone. He's an incredible athlete, just inconsistent.
All I'm saying is a lot can change in one year and not to jump the gun and think we're just going to be the division's door mat for years to come.
You are correct about things often changing year to year but I think part of the issue here is that we often can see the longer term plans to get there. Detroit has been through a multi year transition after trading Stafford and was hot to end last season, many picked them to win the division essentially due to it. The bears are starting to go from all out tanking and are starting to look good towards the end of the season. Trajectory is clearly up with tons of assets to use given their chosen route. Packers is a bit different but there was always hope love could be the guy, this year he looks like it so again trajectory up for them too due to decisions made years ago. It might not work for these teams but all of them have been given clear reasons to at least have hope they are headed in the right direction.
What about us though? We won less games than last year, are debating the same types of moves that lead us to 0 playoff wins in 4 seasons, don’t have a ton of draft/fa ammo like a team that actually rebuilt (bears), don’t have a young qb to be excited about and most of the defense is still a big issue. There just isn’t a ton happening pointing to a new direction with better opportunities ahead.
While a lot can change in a year it often takes multiple years for these directions to pay off. We are seeing the franchises our own fans made fun of as recently as last year (bears) start to turn things around and now seemingly have a brighter future due to it. While we are seemingly headed backwards and still don’t have a clear direction to be hopeful about. While a lot can change year to year and there is almost no way it works for all 3 I think there is legitimate reasons for us to be down on the approach this team has taken. It’s left us in a much worse spot than those others because they had an actual plan and executed it. We are still waiting to see an actual plan for 4 years and counting now with nothing from management/ownership signaling they get it.
