So from the Defensive side of the ball it was a full Rebuild. Tear it down to the studs type of Rebuild. Just minus the trades like the Bills did. Because frankly, nobody was trading anything for Kendricks.
The only tradable asset was and is Hunter. I would have moved him for a 2nd but I get why KAM held firm for a 1st.
Keep your toe half in the water with Cousins and hope Kevin propels him to near the Top of the Tier 2 QBs. Where guys like Stafford reside. And Kirk was on a heater before he got hurt where he was very much looking like that could happen.
So the Offense is legit, though in need of tweaking on the IOL. The Defense is in full Rebuild mode. So you're sort of in limbo while you try to turn around the Defense with Draft Picks and Bandaid Free Agent lottery tickets.
Za'Darius Smith - Good player but into his 30s and wanted out because his contract was too team friendly
Harrison Phillips - Quality run stuffer in his prime
Jordan Hicks - Past his prime run stuffing LB who didn't mesh well in Donatell's scheme, but thrived with Flores
Marcus Davenport - One year gamble on a uber talented, but injury prone edge rusher
Byron Murphy - Nickel / maybe #2 CB on a 2 year deal
We've come out of this with 0 long term investments. Smith and Hicks will both be 32 next year. Phillips is the one bargain deal KAM signed that has been a success, and was a 3 year contract. Davenport would need to be signed to a big boy deal if he panned out, so his signing was really a band-aid for the 2023 season. Murphy is already in need of an extension and he wasn't very good to begin with.
So we're left with one pretty good player in Phillips and now they need to slap more band-aids because the old ones have peeled off because you don't fix a defense by continually signing guys to short term deals.
I understand what you are saying but we haven't exactly been flush with free agent $ the past two offseasons either. This could be the first time since 2018 where we can actually target young foundational type pieces in free agency
