Step one: acknowledge this is not a one year problem, it will take multiple years to build this roster back up
Step two: Use resources towards the future, don’t worry about “competing” in 2024. If it won’t help us in 26 still then there isn’t much of a point.
That will lead us down a different path which gives us some flexibility (don’t need to try and hit every hole this season). So no just trying to fill the gaps because we see an obvious hole, just aim for the best talent possible wherever it might be.
1. Qbotf. I think this looks like a good class to invest in a new qb. This option will save us a lot of cap space over the next 4 years compared to what we have been doing. This sets us up to splurge a bit on defense in the coming years when we are ready for a push.
2. Edge or interior pass rusher. Even if we keep Hunter we need a lot of help on the dline in terms of pass rushing. Over the next two seasons we need to ensure we get both of these but if we use our 1st on a qb then the best we can do is a 2nd and 3rd on these areas which means probably only one of them hits. Thats fine though given this plan we don’t need to sign a Davenport stop gap just because maybe just cheap vet in case the rookies are bad bad.
3. Cornerback. I think if we resign Hunter and move on from smith while staying pretty cheap in terms of filling the gaps we probably have some cap left over if we don’t spend on the qb position. I am not sure if this year or next year is better in the fa market but I think this is another clear area we need at least 1 if not 2 starters.
If we can land those 3 areas this offseason I think it would change the outlook from many really fast. We still have other holes like interior oline, rb, etc to work on too and we should take some shots in the later rounds on them as well. I just think if we landed 3 long term solutions at those premium positions (to add to our basic core of young guys in JJ/addison/darrisaw/hockenson/oniell/pace/bynum/mettellus) we look much better. It’s a pipe dream to have an offseason like that but if we concentrate our main assets only at those areas then stay cheap everywhere else instead of competing it at least gives us a chance. Then we are set up in 2025 to spend some cap and work on filling those remaining gaps.
