Put last night into context. Both Programs haven't been on this stage in decades. Michigan hasn't sniffed making it past the semi-finals. Washington has never been in the modern Era. Their last title was the AP/Coaches Poll Era.
Frankly, both Teams and both Coaching Staffs looked tight. The Huskies seemed to concede right out of the gate that they couldn't block Michigan's 4 Man Rush so to hell with max protect deep shots to Odunze and Polks. All horizontal and short passes.
Penix was nervous AF all night. It happens. McCarthy was managed so he didn't make too many mistakes.
I wasn't surprised at all that Michigan was the far more physically dominant Team. The PAC,12, like the Big 12, is a high scoring, pass happy finesse League. The Big 10, like the SEC, emphasizes strong Line play and running the ball.
What I didn't expect was the Wolverine Secondary to hold up that well. They don't have any 1st or 2nd Round guys but were playing tight coverage against high Round picks. Granted, they got away with holding at least 4 times.
But I'm not going to be a prisoner of the moment because of one poor game between two schools that hadn't been on the brighter stage either in ages or ever before.
Patrick Mahomes had 2 years of passing for over 4,500 yards at Texas Tech. The only other QB to do that since? Michael Penix, Jr.
Penix isn't the pinpoint accurate guy that easily avoided 16 pressures against Texas, much of it up the middle. And he's also not guy who couldn't handle Michigan's pressure and was off on throws all night. He's somewhere in the middle. Which puts him literally miles ahead of Cousins when he left MSU.
