Generally in agreement with your post. And I completely agree that KOCKAM are sharp guys, and that they didn't go all in on the notion that their 13-4 record in 2022 meant they had a 13-4 team going into the 2023 offseason.
But since you mentioned Addison...
He's a good receiver, he's fun to watch, and he's a massive step up from UnCine as #1 picks go. And yet he's one of the reasons that it's hard not to wonder if the brain trust still doesn't get that their lack of talent on defense is a very big problem.
Using a #23 pick overall on a WR2, and one with probably a not-terribly-high ceiling to boot, is the kind of draft decision a GM (and head coach?) makes when they feel they're just a small puzzle piece or two away from a championship... not looking to massively rebuild an entire defense and O-line interior.
Like you said, though, they're smart and hopefully they get it. And like you, I'm thinking it's going to be a really interesting offseason for fans who want to see which direction the KOCKAM regime will take the Vikings organization.
I think it's fair to say they'd be in the playoffs if not for a number key injuries.
Yeah, as I mentioned in my prior post, the 2023 roster looks to me like a 7th seed WC one-and-done playoff team if it had a full season of Kirk.
For a second year GM/HC tandem taking over a trainwreck franchise that's a good season.
For a pair who rode an almost entirely inherited roster to a 13-4 season, it's a bit of a setback unless it's a major rebuild with affordable young players.
