Win or else, and this is the effort your team puts forth? O'Connell isn't going to be fired, but maybe he should be? It says a lot about you, as a Coach, when this is the way your team plays when faced with adversity.
It was an absolute ass-whipping in a very similar situation, back up QB, very little likelihood of post-season that cost Mike Zimmer is job. And then, oh my G-d, ding dong the witch is dead, everybody gets a hug with a reacharound in the morning! And this...this is the sh*t we get?
I know Kirk Cousins was injured. I know Justin Jefferson was injured. I know the Defensive Backfield is a walking M*A*S*H unit now. But, this team was 6-4 and led Denver with minutes left, Chicago with minutes left, Cincinnati with minutes left, and had the ball at Detroit's 30, down 6 with a minute left and nothing but green grass between Nick Mullens and...a lot of things, Brandon Powell, Justin Jefferson, just running for 10 yards...and they lost every single one of those games. That isn't football luck, that is horrible execution in every single one of those situations where just being competent should be enough.
Competence. That us all that stood between the Minnesota Vikings and a playoff berth this year. All the turnovers, all the injuries, all of it could have been an unpleasant memory for a team that overcame a ton of adversity to make something of 2023. I know a lot of you don't care, in fact, probably prefer the season ending like this. Good for you. I am not one of you, and the public statements of the owners should lead us to believe that neither are they. Coaches and players should definitely prefer even a Wild Card loss to meaningless Week 18 games about draft position.
But, apparently, judging by what they put forth for 30 minutes tonight. They don't care. It would be one thing if Green Bay were markedly better than you. They are not. This is effort, execution and just plain laziness. And that is Coaching.
