How important is it to keep B-Flo for 2024 (and beyond)?

Reignman, suncoastvike, and 2 more like this

I literally have 8 tabs open from various sources exploring just this. I've been wanting to start the conversation, but have always found other things to post about first. Anyway, yesterday, I saw a few others discussing possibly losing B-Flo, so, I decided I better get this thread rolling!
I've said it elsewhere, but I think we're effed without B-Flo next season. I don't see it any other way; we'd take a giant step backward. Heck, this season, we probably have three wins without him. And I'm not even kidding. He has been the biggest difference-maker. Sadly, even with all of his magic, he's still barely keeping the team afloat. So, what would it look like without him?
Some other things to consider:
- With his lawsuit, will teams look the other way regardless of all that B-Flo has proven?
- Will he even consider the (possibly very few) teams interested if they're not a better situation than Minnesota?
- Would he rather stay in Minnesota for a while if he really believes in what he and KO can accomplish together? (similar to the Lions coordinators and how they feel about MC/DC and the direction of that team)
I think we were all excited about getting B-Flo, but also understood the very real possibility that he'd leave sooner than we'd all like, especially if he did well. Well, here we are...
What he's doing is freaking impressive. No two ways about it. Also, all of the players rave about him, so...
Probably something only suncoastvike will understand, but...
Here is some of the discussion I've seen recently:

- Is he here in 2024?
- What would need to happen for him to stay?
- How bad would it be for KO to be on his third DC in as many years?
- How would the expectations differ for next season without B-Flo?
- Who is your favorite to take his spot if he were to move on?

@nurseintime Is there an in house replacement for Brian Flores if he leaves?
The coach who might have the best odds is defensive backs coach Daronte Jones. He’s been all over the place grinding as a position coach for 20 years in college and the NFL. The job he’s done with these guys in the secondary has been really good this year considering the amount of development that was needed. I can’t say for sure whether KOC sees him that way or he’d go looking for another experienced DC but that’s the guy who stands out on the staff to me.

Bradley P… Is there an in house candidate to take over for Flores?
People have been high on Daronte Jones, the defensive backs coach, for a long time. He’s done a good job with these young corners/safeties this year.

Jeff G… In my opinion, given the Vikings have been one of the NFL teams most ravaged by injuries this season - the current 6-6 record is actually not too bad! Heck the Bills are also currently 6-6! A number of experts had Buffalo being serious Super Bowl contenders this year - and they haven’t been nearly as injury prone as Minnesota! I guess my message is - fingers crossed for the remainder of the season. Here’s hoping for an injury free last five games, and much better luck when it comes to turnovers - which has been arguably the team’s downfall in 2023 thus far! Also Matthew, I know you have suggested Daronte Jones as a possible “in house” successor to Brian Flores. Give us a couple of people external to the organization who might be given serious consideration for a potentially vacant DC position. My personal guess is Brandon Staley - assuming he loses his job with the Chargers.
I’m with you on the record. You can feel really bad about losing two games by three total points and having so many opportunities this season for the team to have a better record without looking at this as some type of colossal failure of a season. It’s been a different road than we expected but if you told me they would be 6-6 at the bye week after all last year’s changes (even if you didn’t mention Kirk or JJ getting hurt) I would have said OK yeah that’s about right. Then again, we don’t give out fake trophies here. You don’t get a “didn’t completely fall apart!” ring.
I really don’t know about who they would look at outside the building if Flores leaves. Yes Staley may get consideration because he and KOC are really close. That’s a very different defensive style than Flores though. Have to believe they would want to stay in the same system and not make major changes with lots of young players finding their groove with the Flores way.

Brian Flores Sends Vikings Strong Message on Potentially Leaving for New Job
“I understand the question, I really do. My message to our guys yesterday was we’ve got 35 guaranteed days. That’s all we got that’s guaranteed. I asked them to put everything into these 35 days,” Flores said in a December 6 news conference. “I can’t give that message and not heed that message. My focus is on these guys, this team, these next five games because that’s all we really have. I understand the question, but that’s where my focus is.”
He was asked whether he makes intentional decisions to help him avoid looking ahead to the offseason, like telling his agent to not mention the head coaching buzz.
“Yeah, they know not to bring it up,” Flores said with a smirk.
