I can't blame Dobbs or KOC because we were the better team and that was obvious to me. Mattison fumble was huge. Oline disappeared in the 2nd half. So they need to step up. Defense disappointed at the end. Players need to execute and take care of the ball. Those wanting to blame Dobbs I say the two TD's he got throwing and running were only possible because of him. He escaped and runs through the defense for one. Escaped and froze the defense covering his run for an easy flip over the top TD. He didn't look great but his arm gets hit, jeez his face got smashed uncalled by the way. He was getting the ball off with guys hanging on him. I don't think it was any crashing to earth. Not what I saw.
I blame nobody. The better team doesn't always win. Remember that and get ready for the Bears.
I feel the same about Dobbs as you. He didn't crash; his unique attributes got us two TDs. I do share those disappointed that KOC put him into so many pocket passing situations instead of plays that emphasize his skills. That contributed to the OL woes, or rather, how the OL appeared. When Cousins was standing in the pocket our interior OL was a sieve for pass rushers and Kirk was getting hammered. Then Dobbs' mobility, and giving him plays that moved him out of the pocket, made those rushers back off and our OL appeared to have improve. Did KOC think they were really better at maintaining a clean pocket?? He was wrong.
If he wants to go back to the "Cousins offense", he should have waited until he had Jefferson back. As you said, we were still the better team - the stronger team, but we didn't always play to our strengths.
Dobbs does have weaknesses and this game made them clearer. His 1 INT was more the fault of the OL than him, but he made some throws that scared the hell out of me, and if he keeps that up, he's going to have a 3-INT game one of these days. I kind of wish FSUVike had not pointed out last week that Dobbs has small hands, because I couldn't help thinking about it when the fumbles started happening. (9 & 1/4"...yes, even smaller than Daunte's for those wondering.) It means he has to think about ball security even more.
I never like a loss, but that one didn't break my spirit like some seem to feel. In a way it's nice to stop a win streak to take some of the attention off maintaining it, and also to make the players remember they aren't unstoppable.
Take the long week to stress ball security and get KOC to adjust his thinking, then pound the Bears next Monday before the bye. Raiders and Bengals are both beatable even on the road. Hopefully the Lions drop a game or two and we'll be setup for an opportunity to catch them with those key last 3 games.
I guess I'm not as down on a coach under 40 in the middle of only his second season. I'm glad to have him actually.
