Regarding the nonexistent rushing attack, I like all the good points made about the blocking schemes. I am probably seeing this in the most simplistic manner, but a big portion of the blame has to fall on the poor talent at RB, doesn't it?
I consider the re-signing of Mattison, and adding no other significant options at RB, a huge knock on Kwesi. (Or Kevin, if he's actually the man behind the curtain on talent acquisition.) Everyone knew that Mattison was a decent change-of-pace to Cook, but who ever felt he was able to singlehandedly carry a rushing attack that was supposedly going to be stronger than the Vikings' in 2022?? KOC even had Mattison on this team last season, knew his modest skills, and used him less than Zimmer ever did.
Even great RBs need blocking, I get that. But good RBs get the most of their blockers and sometimes make their line play better. Bad RBs - like Mattison - need a LOT of blocking, which this team does not have. IMO signing Mattison seems like some kind of cost-benefit assessment of yards per dollar spent. We needed a better RB if KOC truly wanted to run more, or he needed a true RB-by-committee.
This has hampered the rest of the offense so badly that I wouldn't give KAM more than a D.
Remember, the Vikings did try to go out and get Montgomery in free agency and failed to come to terms with him. So Mattison was the Vikings second choice and Kwesi and KOC both felt they needed better. Still, even with Montgomery the RB room would have been lacking in depth. It would have been Montgomery, and when he got hurt Chandler as the only two viable running backs on the team when most teams have 3 guys who are as good or better than our current starter.
