But he had shots with multiple teams. You left Brett Favre in the list as well since he went from Atlanta to GB. But none of them started on others teams rosters and then were traded after seeing playing time.
Hopefully he does become a great player for us but making a comparison to those players is a bit silly.
I don't consider practice reps to be a true shot. Sure lots of teams have had him in camp. But what makes Dobbs special is his mobility. And that's very tough to simulate in practice because you can't touch the QB.
Here's a little nugget for those that didn't follow Dobbs in college. It took circumstances similar to this for him to get his opportunity at Tennessee. Despite being a 4-star recruit, Dobbs was 3rd on the depth chart his sophomore season behind a guy named Justin Worley (who never played in the NFL) and Nathan Peterman (yes that Nathan Peterman who has some of the worst stats in NFL history for a guy whose started multiple games). Despite Tennessee struggling badly to start that season Vols head coach Butch Jones remained unwilling to let Dobbs start. Most of the fan base started to assume that Dobbs must stink if he couldn't beat out Worley and Peterman (who were awful). Then during the lead-up to the annual showdown against Alabama the two QBs ahead of Dobbs on the depth chart come down with injuries. Butch Jones has no choice but to play Dobbs against Alabama. Dobbs plays like a star that game and almost pulls off the huge upset. He's named the starter after that performance then starts tearing it up down the stretch. He had an epic 300 yard passing 150 yard rushing and 5 TD performance against South Carolina in a come from behind victory.
His play was so good to end that season that everyone who follows Tennessee football and the SEC started to ask why he wasn't the starter to begin with. And why it took injuries for him to get a shot. Word started to come out that Dobbs wasn't exactly the best practice player but when the lights were on he was a gamer. I don't think that is the case. I just think Dobbs skills are magnified in real game situations more than practice. The things that make Dobbs special are his mobility in addition to his passing. If you take away his running then it's easy to see how some teams could overlook him based on practice reps.
All in all, this is actually Dobbs first true opportunity to show the NFL what he's got. It's the first time he's gotten extended snaps in real game situations with a talented supporting cast.
