Is there a QB debate?

Really liked that 18-min Ben Solak breakdown of Dobbs' play from the first 2 weeks w/ the Vikings. Yes, this is deep in the weeds of "X's and O's" football language, but Solak does an excellent job of communicating it simply for the audience. 

One of my more intriguing parts of that clip starts at the 9-min mark when Solak mentions one of the big parts of the Dobbs/Viking story is the mobility. And what Solak says about mobility - that it can just erase negative plays and turn them into positives - is the one thing that Cousins can't provide. And that is not a slight at all against Cousins, it's just that a mobile QB who's smart AND has mobility has another option to his arsenal that non-mobile QB's don't have. And the clip at the 9:57 mark illustrates that perfectly: Dobbs drops back on a play-action pass, goes through the progressions quickly and decides that the best option is scrambling up the gut and he picks up 6 yds on 2nd and 9, setting up 3rd and short/manageable. Now imagine Cousins going through that same play: due to Cousins not having the mobility and seeing the coverage, he either has to make a tremendous throw in tight coverage (which he's certainly capable of), throw it to Powell underneath for a minimal gain, or take a sack. Dobbs gives you the add'l option of not taking the sack and takes out the possibility of the negative play.

The one thing we haven't seen from Dobbs - that Cousins does really well (if given time) - is the downfield/deep shot passing. Dobbs has thrown a few passes in the 15-30 yd area (the TD pass to Hockenson before halftime of the Saints game was a 28-yd TD pass, I think), but we haven't seen play-action deep shots quite yet. They haven't needed to, but I'm definitely curious once Jefferson comes back if O'Connell will attempt to mix-in those deep shots. 

As it stands, the offense under Dobbs does sorta remind me of Philly's offense in the sense that Hurts doesn't throw it deep downfield too much unless there's 1-on-1 w/ AJ Brown or the WR is wide open, and it's more about making the correct decisions closer the first down area, whether it's Hurts passing or taking off running; also Russell Wilson-like during Wilson's early career in Seattle when he just managing the game w/ correct decisions vs taking deep shots later in his Seattle career.  And with long sustained drives with Dobbs acccumulating multiple 1st downs, that only helps the defense with field position and staying fresh on the sidelines. 

Kevin O'Connell is a great offensive mind but Josh Dobbs also is very talented. Just because others didn't recognize it earlier doesn't mean he actually was some untalented journeyman that O'Connell has transformed into a star.

I've been a Josh Dobbs truther since 2014. Been beating the drum that he's an elite QB talent who just needed a chance. Now he's gotten it. Don't be fooled into thinking anyone could do what he's done. This is a legitimately talented young man who just needed somebody to believe in him. Arizona gave him that first chance. They just didn't have much talent around him. Now Minnesota has given him an opportunity and he's running away with it because for the first time in his career he's got elite talent around him and a great offensive minded head coach.

My point is we don’t need the day 2 guy because we got one with the Hall pick and we got him at a great value spot.

We took Mond with a day 2 pick and Hall already shows a lot more potential than Mond did. It’s not where you are picked but how you play and he looks as good as what you see from day 2 QBs

Tom Brady was passed by every team in the league for 6 rounds in the draft. Kurt Warner was out of the league until he was 27 years old. Both needed injuries to even get a shot at starting.

It's not unheard of for every team to miss on a player. Also there were Josh Dobbs truthers (like myself) who were saying for years he was a stud who wasn't getting a chance. Its mostly Tennessee Vols fans who watched him in college and some Pittsburgh Steelers fans who saw him extensively in the preseason that believed in him for a while now. Josh Dobbs rise might be a surprise to most but some of us have been calling for it for years.

I'm sure Pittsburgh wanted to replace Ben Roethlisberger with Dobbs. Kinda like replacing Brady with O'Connell in New England. He had his shot. Right?

He needs to slide. If he can avoid injury, nobody can predict his success or failure, all they can state are the odds based on draft position. "What that means is that you have to not get these horrendous hits that guys get," (Russel) Wilson said. "Sliding is a critical part of protecting the ball, protecting the team and playing winning football."
