As far as how high of a Compensatory Pick Cleveland could have fetched for Minnesota in 2025, here are some comparable free agent deals in the 2022 offseason:
- Austin Corbett signed a 3-yr, $26.25m ($8.75m per yr) deal with Carolina on 3/16/22; the Panthers received a 5th Rd compensatory pick in 2023
- Mason Cole signed a 3-yr, $15.75m ($5.25m per yr) deal with Pittsburgh on 3/14/22; the Vikings received a 6th Rd compensatory pick in 2023
If Minnesota would have kept Ezra and he signed a $7-9m per yr deal elsewhere in the 2024 offseason, the Vikings would have possibly received a 5th Rd pick in 2025. If he would have signed a deal closer to the $5m per-yr range, it would have been a 6th in 2025.
The fact the Vikings received a 6th back is slightly disappointing since I think it's possible Ezra could fetch $7-9m per yr on the open market (he's probably in the Austin Corbett ballpark) and they could have received a 5th back in 2025 instead of a 6th in 2024...
...but, the other part of compensatory picks is that in order to get them, you can't sign any other free agent in the offseason to cancel it out, and the Vikings will probably be signing a few free agent deals in the 2024 offseason given the holes on their roster and it's likely one of them would have voided out Ezra's 5th or 6th in 2025.
So knowing that the compensatory pick would have likely been voided anyway and facing the prospect of not getting anything back for Ezra, it's not too bad to get a 6th in 2024 now...
