Amazingly shallow take. The kid won't be calling a single audible. You will have to greatly reduce the Option Routes that JJ is a master at. He has no experience reading a Defense pre-snap from under the Center. He will have more progressions to read through than BYU ever asked him to.
So what, here's going to run around in a circle until he sees someone that's wide open and then get the ball to him with accuracy?
Have you even seen some of the throws Kirk made between layers of Defenders this year? I am no Cousins defender. History teaches us that he was going to revert back into a pumpkin at some point because he always does. But he was Top 3 in a bunch of categories when he went down.
Yes, he had some accuracy and decision making issues that contributed to the putrid Red Zone production. Iffy playcalling and zero running were bigger contributors, though. And he unquestionably isn't any danger at all with his legs.
But he knew when to stay on JJ long enough for him to declare at the top of an Option Route and when to come off of it and get to his next read. Hall won't have anything like that at all. Kevin will probably scrap those routes altogether so Hall has the comfort of knowing which way his Receiver will be breaking. Which will allow him to throw with anticipation.
Hall also simply doesn't have the arm strength Kirk has. His arm is good enough. But he's not going to be able to fire the ball into a small window in tight coverage. Which takes KJ out of the mix since the dude hardly ever gets separation.
Short, quick passes thrown with anticipation to wide open guys will be the best we can realistically expect on Sunday. Hopefully mixed in with some designed runs and RPOs. Though hopefully without Mattison being on the field for those RPO looks.
To expect much more is patently ridiculous considering how well Cousins was finally playing and just how raw Hall is due to coming out of the system he was in at BYU.
This is all very well said. Im not the biggest Kirk guy but its because as a Viking fan you want to see a SB and greatness as you have seen everything else. Kirk is a pros pro, we can hate on him all we want and maybe want better but that is still very hard to replace. It was cool to see him audibling at the line this year, your not going to get that from Jaren or Dobbs. We were getting the best of Kirk these last few weeks its a shame what happened. Im excited to see a younger more mobile guy, but thats going to leave the door open for other things to not go well that we take for granted from Kirk. I dont think we are dead in the water especially if JJ comes back vs the Saints, but Sunday @ the Falcs could be a rough one if we dont have a run game. Im cautiously excited. Itll be cool to see someone else not named Mannion take a meaningful snap in a Vikings game for the first time in 6 years
