As the calendar turns to November and the 1st half of the 2023 NFL season comes to a close, teams that are in position to battle for Division titles and Playoff spots will possibly make deals at the trade deadline and gear-up for the 2nd half...
...but what about teams that may not be position for the Playoffs; what do they do? If recent history is correct, they start handing out pink slips to Head Coaches/GM's and repeat the phrase, "well, there's always next season"...
For the last 10 seasons, there has been at least one Head Coach fired mid-season:
2013:
12/6/13: Texans fire Gary Kubiak just 1 month after he collapsed at halftime of a game against the Colts on 11/3
2014:
9/29/14: Raiders fire Dennis Allen after going 0-4 start the season and a combined 8-28 record since his hiring in Jan 2012
2015:
10/5/15: Dolphins fire Joe Philbin after a 1-3 start
11/3/15: Titans fire Ken Whisenhunt after a 1-6 start
12/29/15: Eagles fire Chip Kelly right before the last regular season game in a "statement move" by owner J Lurie
2016:
12/12/16: Rams fire Jeff Fisher just 1 week after signing him to an extension thru 2018
12/18/16: Jaguars fire Gus Bradley after compiling a 14-48 record after nearly 4 seasons
12/27/16: Bills fire Rex Ryan (and his brother Robb) just three days after a Christmas Eve loss to the Dolphins
2017:
12/4/17: Giants fire Ben McAdoo after he replaced Eli Manning with Geno Smith
2018:
10/29/18: Browns fire Hue Jackson after amassing a 3-36-1 record in nearly 3 seasons
12/2/18: Packers fire Mike McCarthy after 13 seasons and a .613 winning %
2019:
10/7/19: Washington fires Jay Gruden after an 0-5 start (Kevin O'Connell was the OC)
12/3/19: Panthers fire Ron Rivera after nearly 9 seasons (and 1 Super Bowl appearance) as HC
2020:
10/5/20: Texans fire Bill O'Brien after appointing him the GM in January and running the franchise straight into the ground
10/11/20: Falcons fire HC Dan Quinn and GM Thomas Dimitroff after an 0-5 start
11/28/20: Lions fire HC Matt Patricia and GM Bob Quinn after an embarrassing Thanksgiving Day loss to the Texans
2021:
10/11/21: Raiders HC Jon Gruden resigned after controversial emails he sent Washington GM Bruce Allen between 2011-2018 were reported in the media
12/16/21: Jaguars fire Urban Meyer after inappropriately "touching" a woman and abusing his own players
2022:
10/10/22: Panthers fire Matt Rhule after a 1-4 start and making horrible QB decisions
11/7/22: Colts fire Frank Reich after going 40-33-1 and hired an ESPN TV Analyst to replace him (who went 1-7)
12/26/22: Broncos gave Nathaniel Hackett a pink slip the day after Christmas after a 51-14 loss to the Rams. Hackett and Urban Meyer were 2 of only 5 HC's to not last their 1st season as HC since 1970.
Much like the start of free agency, the Draft and the schedule release, firing Head Coaches mid-season has become an annual tradition in the NFL, and the only question is: which current NFL coaches will get an early start to their Christmas shopping in 2023?
Per Bookies.com Senior Handicapper Adam Thompson (link), here are the latest odds:
Who do you think will be the first NFL Head Coach to be fired in 2023? Personally, I would add Raiders HC Josh McDaniels to the list as it's obvious he's not an NFL Head Coach after choking his 2nd bite of the apple...
