Taylor Heinicke will start for the Falcons in Week 9.
Heinicke came in for Desmond Ridder last week against the Titans after Ridder may or may not have suffered a concussion. The move to Heinicke comes a week after head coach Arthur Smith dismissed all criticism of Ridder as “toxic groupthink.” Heinicke threw for 175 yards and a touchdown in the Week 8 loss to the Titans, adding two rushes for 14 yards. It was only a matter of time before Smith soured on Ridder, who is clearly not an NFL starting caliber QB, struggling even in an offensive caretaker role. The Falcons, who were not interested in acquiring Lamar Jackson this offseason, will now give Heinicke a chance under center. Against the Titans last week, he had a 12.3 average depth of target, far higher than Ridder’s 8.1 aDOT in 2023. Heinicke is a viable option in superflex leagues.
