Let's go over how realistic some QB acquistions would be now that Cousins appears to be done for the year.
Current Cap Space: Around $9.66M
Trade Options
I don’t think trading for a QB is the way to go, but I am basing this on posts from here and Twitter on suggestions on who the Vikings could trade for:
Kyler Murray
Somebody suggested this, but they clearly have no idea how the salary cap works. Trading Murray would incur a $43.2M cap hit on Arizona’s cap (which they cannot afford) and while the Vikings would only have to pick up about 50% of his $2M salary, they’d be locking themselves into big cap hits from 2024 to 2026, enough so that the 2024 salary would be nearly at its limit as you’d be paying Murray about $39M and Cousins’ void year hit of $28.5M. This is not in the realm of possibility.
Ryan Tannehill
With Levis making Tannehill irrelevant, the Vikings could acquire Tannehill but would have to pick up a prorated amount of his $27M salary which is around $12-13M. He’s been bad so far this year and we’d have to clear cap to make it happen, making it a stupid move.
Teddy Bridgewater
The Lions aren’t trading him to their only threat to their first division title since I’ve been born, and it would force David Blough into being their backup QB. Nope.
Andy Dalton
Picking up his prorated $1.165M salary would be chump change, but they would pick up his 2024 $6M number, which isn’t bad at all for a high quality backup. With how Dalton has played the past couple years, this would be a fine choice.
Case Keenum
The 35 year old has fallen behind Davis Mills and hasn’t been active this season. Houston could trade him and save $2.47M while the Vikings would have to pick up part of his $2.25M salary. I’d feel OK with him as a backup, certainly over Mannion.
Free Agents
Carson Wentz
Only 31 years old, Wentz has been garbage for a couple years but I wouldn’t put it past O’Connell to get something more out of the well from him. He’s by far the best guy on the market and that is saying something.
Joe Flacco
The 38 year old has yet to retire, and was mediocre in his last action with the Jets. I’d take Mullens over him.
Colt McCoy
He wasn't good enough for the Cardinals to keep as they opted for Josh Dobbs and Clayton Tune. He looked cooked in 4 games last year and is now 37. The Vikings did work him out when Mullens first got hurt, so he is on their emergency list.
Retirees
Tom Brady
It would take a lot to coax Brady out of retirement, but his play dropped last year as he finally began to look his age. I would maybe consider this move if the Vikings were on the brink of a Super Bowl run, not a wild card run. I don’t think he would accept our offer – he’s the one free agent on this list who would need to be paid the big bucks.
Matt Ryan
I am willing to bet he’d love to return to playing, but he was so bad last year I’d rather not. He barely functioned in Indy last year and his durability would be a concern.
My opinion - I'd pull the trigger on Dalton at the right price (we're talking like a 6th/7th rounder). I'd do Keenum or Wentz (on a vet minimum) as options over Mannion.
Any names I missed?
