Davenport to IR?

I stated the dead cap is the problem, I dont understand the rolled over part? If I guy is off your books you have that cap again lol or am I missing something. He will account for the dead cap in 2024 at 7 million thats it. 

Probably not a popular idea but a one year near vet minimum deal would allow us to spread out that 2024 dead cap hit. We need multiple front 7 types this offseason and he wouldn't be counted on to start

That's why I wouldn't want him back at all. He can go get his next payday from some other team. I get why they brought him in, they were looking for a one year rental on a passrusher that wouldn't financially hamstring them long term if he didn't work out, or they strike gold if he got his stuff together. He failed, and had no interest in trying to get back on the field from the sounds of it. Good riddance.

Agreed. I can't see him getting near what he got on this deal. He already had questions about him in New Orleans, his short stop here offered answers, regrettably the answer was he's completely unreliable.

To be clear, I'm probably more pro-KAM than most of the people on this board so far. I'm still upset about the Detroit trade (and for that matter the whole class), but he also has shown that he wasn't going to get fleeced again, and his trades since have shown his ability to get value. Do you really think Rick would have picked up a QB at the deadline for cheap? And the 2024 class has looked a lot better.

I also think he's done a fantastic job toeing the line between the Wilf mandate and cleaning up Rick's mess. We were in cap hell when he took over and we're going to be in really good shape in 2025. As it is in 2024, we're going to have somewhere between 40-50M to work with, assuming we don't sign any of the guys whose dead cap is accelerating. He's done well.

So don't take this as me trolling him. But... he's not without criticism. This is one thing I've noticed though is that he's a bit too willing to gamble on injury risk without understanding the limitations of said gamble. There's a time and a place. I'd be really cautious about doing that when it comes to drafting often injured college players. That might be fine with a throw away late round pick on a guy that could have gone a lot higher, but I'd pretty queasy about using a high round pick on someone that cannot stay healthy when most of their competition doesn't even look like an NFL player unless my training staff can tell me exactly why and how they can fix it. The same is true with Davenport. His health problems weren't a secret, and I really doubt there was a second team offering a 1/12 deal. I get the all-world talent, we saw it the 2 games he was on the field. But we paid 13M for those games. We'll still be paying for next year.

KAM is a wall street guy. I'd think he should know how to play poker. The offer should have been a few million with a crap ton of playing incentives.

That's one of the things I hope he learns most. Being cautious about taking on injury prone players. Hopefully getting burned like this is the lesson needed to spark that change.

I'm not thrilled with the Davenport signing. I was leary of it to start with but I get why it was done. I don't think the contract was necessarily awful. In the grand scheme of how much money gets spent and wasted its a pretty small amount really. It stinks and now we move on.

It was a calculated gamble but if I'm honest I don't know if they really expected it to hit at all. I've kinda developed a theory that KAM and the FO really held back in FA last year knowing this season was going to be a step back and they still needed to do some roster cleaning. Davenport and Murphy were moves to try to reinforce the roster without putting too much bad money on the books.

We've been talking about a reset for the roster. I think the reset button was pressed last year. I think and hope we see a more aggressive offseason plan this year and going forward. If Kirk isn't back I'm thinking they might go after a big ticket FA on Defense. A young vet getting the big 2nd contract. Probably on defense. It would be nice if we could retain Hunter and add a real big FA to the defense.

If they retain Kirk and Hunter, they have a lot more cap space in 2024, because a good chunk of Kirk's 28.5 dead cap and Hunters 14.5 dead cap gets pushed into future years. I'd expect them to do a lot to shore up the defense. That's how those void years work, assuming of course the contracts are signed before those void years terminate. But with 40ish M in free space, they can do plenty to shore up the D without retaining either since big name FAs don't have to cost a ton in 2024.
