OK, folks. Teach me about football. Because I can't for the life of me figure out why the answer isn't Kevin O'Connell every week.
Flores blitzes, the opposing Team's Offense picks it up OR..., wait for it...has a play called to beat the blitz.
Everyone gets that there are plays you can call that can gash a Defense when it blitzes that don't require picking up said blitz with blocking, right?
You know who doesn't believe that? Kevin O'Connell. And we see the evidence every single week. Every single week, Flores blitzes, the OC is ready and the Offense makes a play. Every single week the DC blitzes, KO doesn't have a plan to beat it and Cousins gets nailed.
Now, plenty of that is on Kirk. He seems clueless about where the extra guy or guys is coming from. But the typical play calles seems to be 5 step drop and chuck it 10+ yards down the field.
I swear I saw a play in the 1st Quarter where the Chiefs sent TWO Corners. Two. That means someone was wide open, right? Well, the backs of their jerseys were wide open. Hard for Cousins to complete passes to Receivers who don't even turn around and make themselves available as a hot read when the guys covering them blitz.
You can make a Defense pay for blitzing if you try. The best Defenses of all time have been caught with screens, draws, slants. All plays Minnesota either can't execute at all (screens) or won't even try.
The Offensive Line is fine. Mahomes behind this exact Line with Eric Bienemy calling plays could dissect any Defense overly reliant on blitzes. It's literally math. They bring an extra guy=someone's open somewhere.
Except in the zany world of Kevin O'Connell. A magical land where nobody is ever open no matter how many extra players are sent after the slow-footed, slow-reading QB. A mysterious world where Quick Passing schemes are mere legend. Where slants are fairy tales. And Offenses loaded with talent start the season 1-4.
I've seen enough. He doesn't get it. And that will earn my vote for the Deflated Ball every week.
