Many positives in 2023 despite losing four of the first five:
- Powell, Risner, and Akers have contributed. ... someone on the Vikings has a good eye for talent among existing NFL players
- Ivan Pace is good. - someone has a good eye for talent among LBs - even if they are not tall "enough"
- The Offensive Line is now good and is likely to bet better with actual depth at Guard and Center
- Addison is an athlete and a competitor who makes plays - despite being small for a WR - his athleticism is easy to see and harder to measure
- Hockenson and Oliver are a very good Tight End duo
- Cousins is a better QB than he often gets credit for - some of his throws against SF were elite... KO and co have also helped him improve
- The RB group has some talent with Akers and Chandler - I see Mattison as more of pounder who can wear out defenses in the 2nd half
- KO and co have improved their play-calling and game planning. They neutralized the SF defense, and with JJ are likely to score at least 7 more points
- The Vikings defense is improving. They are making it harder for teams to move the ball, and the run defense is surprisingly stout since the debacle in Philly.
- Individual Vikings defenders are showing they are good players - Hunter, Smith, Hicks, Bynum, Metellus, Pace, Phillips, even Wonnum.
- The CB group is improving: Murphy, Evans, Booth!?!
- Flores is a definite improvement over Donashell.
Only the truly elite teams like the Chiefs with Reid/Mahomes and Pats with Brady/Belichik can be counted on to win 12+ games consistently. The rest of the NFL is likely to get beat on any given day if they don't play well or make too many mistakes. Our Vikings could flop against mediocre teams if they don't bring it and minimize mistakes. As frustrating as the Vikings have been since 2018 with Cousins, a weak O-Line, and then weak defenses, I'm going to appreciate the rest of this season because it is possible that all three will be good enough to stack wins. There is no guarantee that the 2024, 2025, or 2026 Vikings will be good with the next QB.
