So you are saying that the chance of either a career-threatening injury or unforeseen dip in play is exactly zero? I'm not sure that you can back that up.
Of course, you're also leaving out the fact that if we don't extend him until next year we have banked a year of his performance for fourth year rookie money.
I'm trying to think of other examples... uh, Jimmy Graham had a patellar tendon rupture and was never the same after it, yet still got pretty good money on the FA market. And he's somehow on a 53 man roster at age 37. Not injury related, but our old safety Anthony Harris turned down a significant offer and never sniffed any kind of money like it again... but he doesn't hold a candle to JJ.
Even if he does get extended, his fourth year is going to remain cheap, but would just have 1/5 or 1/6 of the signing bonus applied to it, as would the 5th year. It's standard for extensions to put the big money in the new years.
