The ol' "Should starters play in preseason?" debate lives on.
Agree with Tomlin?
What about with KO?
Interesting stuff here about the starting quarterbacks:
Unless you're Mahomes, you should probably play a little bit. Oh, he does play in preseason. Of course he does... If guys like Mahomes and Rodgers play in preseason, doesn't that kind of shatter all arguments about players being too precious and fragile to expose to preseason?
I'm not saying that the starters should play a lot, ... but not at all? JJ can probably afford to take preseason off, but who else has earned that right? Smith? That's my whole list. We have a lot of young guys on this team, who could benefit from preseason action, both individually and as a group.
Yeah, training camp and joint practices ... that's okay for veterans, but what about all of the youth on this team? We talkin' 'bout practice. Guys aren't going 100%. You know who is, though? Opposing preseason teams with a bunch of guys fighting for their football lives. Give me more of those reps all day!
So, starters or not, why not give the young guys significant playing time? And what about all of the depth pieces? We've all heard the stories about how little practice time backups actually get, so, what better time to let them get valuable reps? Oh, and please call at least a French vanilla preseason game so the guys can actually compete. What the heck are you really evaluating when you're just rolling over and not letting the guys battle? You're evaluating Hall when he's playing with/against a bunch of future insurance agents?
Anyway, obviously I lean towards playing some starters, but I'm also interested in getting our roster depth more meaningful reps. If someone goes down, our backups are going to be ready based on the little practice time they had in camp and preseason? Is that what we're going with? What could possibly go wrong?
I get taking a look at some unique talents in preseason, but at the end of the day, there are really only a handful of guys' roster spots truly in question. Most practice squad guys are generally decided, as well. So, why waste so much time playing some of these "WHO?!" guys? Why not use that time to let your new, young starters and backups get some work in?

In sum: WHY WASTE PRESEASON!?!?
